i saw the article u posted from Caricom fisheries, and me no too believe it, cause the other day, they were running fishermen from our shores, well a did lobster dem did a fish fah, but still.......some a dese article u cant even believe....

We finally reach – get the package we came to get and by that time, I’m . Because all my cousin can do is chat – fulla chat. Two 2s – nite ketch wi. Last place you want to be traveling at night is from Constitution Hill back down to Papine. I don’t know HOW people livva dem place deh. Constitution Hill – <span style="font-style: italic">che</span>!

God alone brought us down that mountain safely and we move to go home – back to country. A fight ensues between my UK cousin and I because, we CANNOT SEE THE ROAD!

Didn’t know if I’d make it back to NY – didn’t know if I’d ever see my husband again.

All I could think about, was that we were going to get washed away or drive off the roadway. It seemed perfectly logical to me because there was nothing visible in front of us.

You couldn’t even see the white lines in the road like you normally do. There’s nothing to look at to guide you. All you could do is follow CLOSE CLOSE behind the one an two car whe deh fronta yuh caah is fiddem tail light alone you coulda baily mek out. Den no, yuh cyaah fallah too close saka dem brake up an yuh goodall lick up inna dem back.

Then now, my cousin wouldn’t even pull over somewhere and let us wait out the rain. I was willing to even just pull to somewhere safe and sit but he wasn’t having it.

We manage to make it to the start of the gorge and I was literally crying. Not loud but the tears were flowing. All I want to do is get out of this car alive. We go over flat bridge – I’m thankful but find no relief whatsoever.

From the damn to the roundabout took an hour and a half. This is like, what – a 20 minute drive normally ... ? When we get to the stop light to turn to Linstead, the radio announces that the bridge is covered, the gorge impassable and closed. Talk about cutting it close.

We make our way toward Mt. R and it only got worse.

More and more now, we start to see cars stranded by the side of the road. The water on the road is high – seems like it’s about a foot deep. Idiot cousin is literally forced to go slow.

I’m more disturbed because, I feel like all these cars are shutting off because water is getting into their muffler. Not good. We’re not in an SUV. We’re in a little Probox. They’re very low!

It was some minutes after midnight when we start to go up Mt Rosser.

I thought going uphill might not be so bad – better than driving on a flat surface, right? At least you’re not driving thru standing water, right?

No way.

Now, we’re dodging – actually dodging, debris that falling off the hillside. Great – just great!

Take your pick – drowning or death by landslide?

Anyway, it’s a few minutes after midnight and we continue the slow climb.

Brips!

Full stop.

All of a sudden – no cars moving.

Vehicles are jammed to stop. Can go no further because

no one can see anything and
there’s a huge tree and boulder that’s fallen into the road

You guessed it – we set up to sleep on Mt Rosser.

As a matter of fact, everyone on the road way set up for bedtime.

Seems like I’m the only one in panic mode.

Everyone else is either faking it or must just be high because I don’t see HOW anyone can <span style="font-weight: bold">not</span> see what’s going on here.

The road we’re on is narrow as all hell and I just feel like, at any moment, it could break away.

Hello! <span style="font-style: italic"> Non stop rain for 4 weeks!</span>

Maybe around 3oclock, there was a break. Kinda like an eye in a hurricane.

A very small break – didn’t last even 10 minutes.

I took out my camera and could only snap this ...




I couldn’t keep the camera out the window too long because it was getting drenched.

It was during that break, some little boys, then later some men came out of the night with some ropes.

Even after the rain started up again, they stayed out there. Work like crazy they did.

They managed to pull the tree out of the road.

The broke up part of the boulder that they could. Much of it was soft stone – other parts, hardened dirt it seemed. Eventually they were able to push some parts of it into the gully.

You would think it would get better from there but it didn’t.

Of course not.

That’s the story of my life.

Once the road was cleared and the cars lined up, we started moving. Very slowly, but moving.

Mi seh – <span style="font-style: italic">some breedah traila wemmie si pass wi ah come down dah mountain deh?</span> <span style="font-weight: bold">NO</span> breedah road dah Jamaica fi dem truck deh. Truss mi.

We going on thru the wee hours ... hoping to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Traffic eventually picks up and thins out. After a while - just us alone on the road.

We keep driving. It’s still raining like mad. STILL!

Wi di deh ah galang galang galang – then, BAM!

Jap dung inna patole – tiyah buss.

Mercy.

This is somewhere before we get to Swansea. I can tell because I know the bend of the road – know the area very well – I can feel where we are. That’s all you can do - “feel” because you can’t see. May as well have been in the belly of a whale because that’s how much light there was.

NO LIGHT!

NONE!

We’re not on the beltway, the a1, 95south, the jersey turnpike.

We’re in the pitch black.

I decided I was going to choke my cousin, right then and there on the SPOT, if there was no spare in the trunk.

Lucky for him – there was.

All 5 of us have to get out because we each have to hang over him changing the tire ... holding the 1 single umbrella we have (lotta good that did) and shining the light from each of our cell phones to illuminate the wheel and the ground in case one of the nuts fell.

Once we got the tire changed, I just had to laugh.

I really couldn’t think of what else could happen so I had to laugh.

Anyway – we go on, on, on ...

A few minutes before 6, we pull into Ochie and continue on home.

Never can I remember being so happy as when I stepped thru the gate that morning.

And wouldn’t you know it – the very next day, someone pulled the gate at the mouth of the CLOSED gorge and went thru. Some hours after, a tractor trailer followed and went thru and pitched over into the river.

There but for the Grace and mercy of God, go I.

However, while other islands may be managing their resources well, JA is like the wild west of the sea, attracting the less law-abiding elements from the rest of the Caribbean and Central America.

MGee - what I can't understand - is why people take such chances where water is concerned?

Why is the risk greater than your life - why?

I can't comprehend it.

Quite a few people died while I was home - all from being washed away or house falling into the river, re re re ...

If the gorge is closed - what on this earth, is going in your life that's so critical, that you'd pull the gate and go thru?

To me, water is one of the most destructive forces in existence - because, people think they will be able to overcome or that they can control it.

Yuri, the only reason i can think of is that people have a greater fear than water. Maybe the fear of being robbed and killed while out on the road.

Also, large fish need deep water. The deep water has low oxygenation levels.
