We don't need a police state; we need the right to bear ARMS. The state fail to protect this woman and her child. If this woman and her child had a few shot gun's inside their house they would be alive. When we depend upon the state to defend us this is what happen.

Gunmen can have guns, while citizens have to wait until police to arrive. 911 is a Joke!

Mi nuh agree with the cartoonist implication of JFJ into this debacle.

We either have an effective justice system where the criminals are caught, procedures followed, justice served (=JFJ happy) and the crime is tamed.

Or we have a military dictatorship where people disappear, the system is not challanged (=no room for JFJ to operate) and there is no crime cause de gunman dem fraid.


Unfortunately we have neither. A an ineffective justice system, corrupt police where procedures are not followed, (=JFJ vex an rightly so) and crime is rampant.

Even though I am against the killing. The killers do have rights. A right to a fair trial. Everyone is entitled to a fair trial no matter how horrible the crime is.

However all of this could have been avoided if this woman was able to have a shotgun in her house.

It is beyond disgusting. I read something awhile back from Dr Aggrey Irons I believe where he estimated that more than 50 percent of the population in Jamaica is mentally ill. A large section of the population in Jamaica seems incapable of dispute resolution without resorting to violence. Let us see how long the public outrage lasts. Common sense says a permanent police presence needs to be stationed in these communities. St Catherine need a Tivoli style invasion BUT without the reckless shooting and inflated body count. To think that this promising young lady from this poor community went to Queens and did well enough there to be going to UWI to study law. Down wid One Order, down with Klansman for killing off black people in worse ways than racist slave owners did. Mi heart....

JFJ denounces beheading atrocities

HUMAN rights lobby group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) has denounced the shooting and beheading of three residents of the community of Lauriston, St Catherine and called for all Jamaicans to make a stand against the prevailing culture of violence.
Church minister Charmaine Rattray and her daughter Joyette Lynch were attacked by gunmen who invaded their Lauriston home on the outskirts of Spanish Town early yesterday morning. The gruesome killings occurred near to the spot where 18-year-old Scott Thomas, also called 'Scottie', was beheaded at his home on Monday.
&quot;We must stand firmly to say that this barbarity is wrong and the whole society must condemn it, stand together against it and use strong action, within the law, to deal with it. Respect for the rule of law is what will serve as the shield between decent, law abiding citizens and the common criminals who would destroy us,&quot; said JFJ.
JFJ implored that in resisting such violence that Jamaicans also resist the urge to seek violent retribution.
&quot;We ask that all law abiding members of society work with, support and encourage members of the police force as they strive fearlessly and lawfully to serve, protect and reassure the community of Lauriston and the rest of Jamaica. We ask the police to work swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators, and bring them to justice in a court of law. We appeal to anyone with information re the commission of these vicious acts or the whereabouts of the perpetrators or their supporters, to immediately provide this information to the police,” JFJ said.

i think the idea that a citizen might be armed might prove a deterrent to random crime but when it come to targeted crime and &quot;hits&quot; i do not think it will have any impact.

I agree with you on this RichD,

A shotgun or any gun in the hands of someone not trained to use it is of no use. As you pointed out, if the gang had these people targeted they'd wait for the opportune moment to kill them.

This rush to arm everyone is just part of the stupidity of addressing violence with more violence which solves nothing, prevents nothing.
It, like most right wing thinking addresses the symptoms of a problem and not the problem itself.

Lack of jobs and a despairing view of the future is what caused the &quot;Arab Spring&quot; and those hopes will be dashed when the same old, same old prevails in the future. Jamaica's problems are caused by the same things.

There needs to be changes in the economy because CAPITALISM IS NOT WORKING FOr TOO MANY PEOPLE. There aren't enough jobs that pay a living wage in a capitalist economy in Third World countries.


SO go on and talk about how the police are to blame, that criminals have too many rights, that it is a shame , that it is sad, yes, talk about ANYTHING but avoid the only thing that can change Jamaica's downhill slide .

But as someone quite correctly pointed out earlier, Jamaicans are not ready to make the necessary changes.

They are far too subservient to authority to do anything but complain quietly.
