Among these is a mention of the fact that the Coast Guard and the National Guard are not included in the Posse Comitatus Law.

Also as pointed out by others, breaking U.S law is not uncommon for U.S leaders like Obama who can just say and have accepted that things like the War Powers Act do not apply and case closed.

Sorry Emp,

As stated the small local disturbances/riots/ demonstrations can be handled by the local police.
Bigger demos etc can be handled with help from the state police and then the National Guard.
The armed forces have not had to intervene for a great many decades.
The National Guard rarely has to be called and and even then it is precautionary overkill and not a shoot 'em up face off with demonstrators.

The corporate media which more or less parrots what the government leaders (owned and controlled by corporate America) have to say have a firm control over what most Americans think and force has become unnecessary .

They have people thinking that there is no better way, that capitalism and rule by the wealthy is just fine, that war is peace, poverty is eternal and unavoidable, that Obama is better or could be better than Bush and on and on.

You don't need tanks and guns to convinced the already convinced.

jc, I'm not sure how much control there is over &quot;most Americans&quot;. Less than half of all Americans read a newspaper 3 or more times a week and an even smaller percentage of those who do, read the editorial content.....such as it is. The situation with TV is even worse as hard &quot;news&quot; ...again, such as it is,...occupies only about the first 2-3 minutes of network broadcasts and even fewer pay attention to this.

The carnival barkers on right wing radio are another matter but in relationship to the potential audience of some 230 million or so adults, their hard core fan club is relatively miniscule and could not be described as &quot;most Americans&quot;. The newstalk shows on network and cable TV have even tinier audiences.

here's the thing, most Americans haven't the faintest idea of what is going on their own country.....let alone in the world and could not care less. And I come across people who are proud of their ignorance everyday.

While I agree with most of your post, I know that it requires something like 10% of a given population to control the thinking of the rest.

True most people do not or cannot read anything very deep but enough people do watch, listen to or read the news on TV between mindless personality shows, on the radio between music and occasionally and increasingly rarely in the newspapers.
Increasingly &quot;news&quot; comes from the internet but this &quot;news&quot;, information is badly tainted by rumour, conspiracy craziness and other unsubstantiated claims as we see on a far too regular basis.

That said, if Obama gives a speech, that crap is parroted by all these media and those who watch the news to a very limited extent and whose intellectual curiosity is very limited, their gullibility almost unlimited will believe what is said ( blind faith in authority) or not even have it register.

The vast majority of the people just go along to get along and they are not of the type to be controversial and even want to think that they are not being told the truth .
