Question time: those 25.1% of black families, do they live in areas that are accessible to fresh fruit/veggie markets or are they interned in those areas with a pile of fast food chicken/burger/places?

i think i read that on here once that there are mainly corner stores in certain areas and they don't generally carry produce.

Sues, in nyc as far as i can see, almost all the neighborhoods have dem fresh vegetable stores....(korean market)

a in deh we get we veggies, saltfish, fresh fish sometimes, yam, jcan cheese, sweet potatoe, pig tail, maggi mix, we condense milk dats cheaper dan the supermkt, and dem tings dere, so in nyc dem have dem....

and i think in the burbs, dem supermarket pretty stock wid all u want in veggies and fruits, so???

You speaking true words Sista. A lot of these things you need to get when they are on sale. You don't wait until you run out, and yes one does need to know how to make their dollars stretch.

Don't even get me started on the Oscar Meyer lunchables and the like. You may as well pile your money in the street and burn it with a good dose of salt on top. Woo sah!

I hate lunchables so glad she stop dat request

yes I use the flyers to stock up on basics - but I do buy the kosher frozen pizza at Costco cause I can at least read the ingriedients and is a good snack for de long boy in the house.

We got a lot out of the garden this year and it helps that I am in the garden state so dont have to travel far for veggies this time of year

my grand kids dem know me naa joke wid dem when dem go a supermkt, my daughter come in like she a buy wha dem like, noooo if u want toys we can go to Toys R Us, in the supermkt we buy good stuff to eat

and its funny, kids will eat the good stuff if u buy it, and dont buy the junk,

u wont find junk in my house, little debbie and dem tings deh, noooo sah,

snacks in my house is - yogart, tuff crackers, Ritz crackers, cheese (all kinna cheese...a me weakness dis), grapes, fruits, but when i go to my daughters house, i cringe, the amount a junk i see (potatoe chips of all sort, little debbie, and some heap a odder singting....eewwwww)

now...my little one dem like hot dog, and I will buy hot dogs once in a while, but only if a Hebrew Natl, (hot dog a one nasty somting....but de odder day me start check out the chicken hot dogs, and dem cheaper dan HN when dem no deh pan sale)

i felt guilty reading this ... this weekend i had to throw out a bunch of stuff out of my pantry when i did i noticed that i bought things that were tucked in the back that had not been used in years. I decided to donate the canned stuff and dump the rest and just focus on keeping and subsequently replacing the basics. The result = I literally only have two shelves of food and this includes the incase hurricane come corned beef, tuff crackers (tx ctry), an ocean's worth of tuna, sardines and other emergency supplies. I literally did not need that much food. this article made me feel much worse than actually getting rid of the food

Yes Sue in some poor neighborhoods in NYC [Harlem] there are no big supermarkets only those small corner shops bogeda (sp) and they don't sell fruits maybe they carry small amount of apples, ripe bananas or oranges and the prices for these are extremely high so poor people cannot afford to buy these staples every day. I know they have recently opened 2 large chain supermarkets in Harlem but it is not accessible to everyone. Some would have to take the train and or 1 or 2 buses just to go food shopping. I just recently moved from upper Manhattan and had one of those bodega on the ground floor of my building. I could not afford to buy anything there but the newspaper. The mark-up on the goods were so high only people with the benefit cards shopped there. Thankfully, there were a few spanish markets with green bananas, plantain, avacados, name, dasheen, etc. Dasheen is $2.48 per lb and I work but I think it is too expensive to buy. If you are poor with 3 or 4 children buying rice, flour, potatoes and cornmeal will stretch further than buying from the food groups that is healthier for everyone.
