so, got told off good and proper this morning by directa ooman. key message from her: i am the director.

my latest sin? saying to one of my team that i will keep an eye out for developmental opportunities for her (she wants to become a manager).

how directa ooman saw that (mi did cc har on the message) : she wants to keep talent in the place, i am going around looking for ways to get talent out of the branch.

can i please allow her to build a good team? she's the director, she will determine what opportunities people can get for development. she wants me to look for internal opportunities - within the branch, not even in other parts of the organization.


i'm a little shell-shocked, to say the least. Not because of the full frontal attack (she must have been stewing over this), but the sheer <span style="font-style: italic">ungenerosity </span>of her position.

i managed to get out that i've been giving this team member opportunities for the past two years - she needs to go out and test some of what she has been learning. i even managed to get out that i myself, in my career path to management, been given opportunities elsewhere to grow.

what i didn't get out was - if this team member goes off on a short term assignment somewhere, her spot becomes an opportunity for another talented person to get professional development. i thought it was a good point, but directa ooman was so worked up, i decided to just say what ever to calm her down.

i ended up telling her i understood her prerogative as director. that though i disagreed with her approach, i would respect the parameters she is setting.

but i'm shaking my head. i'm starting to question my own judgment, my own sense of doing what i think is right. and that is not a good thing.

That is a part of her plan/trap. Get you confused, get you to begin to question your own abilities/decisions, get you to the point of ultimate paranoia and then and only then, will she succeed at getting you moved out of the way.

Pick your battles with this one very carefully. Document everything and do not fall into her trap. As I mentioned before, she will eventually hang herself. She is too stupid not to.

Do it now while it's still fresh in your mind. Bonus points if you find corporate or HR policy that contradicts her foolishness.

i'm thinking on this. she will see it as a declaration of war.

i'm mulling over kqrowbait's advice and seeing whether this is a battle i want to pick.

the issue is that the person on my team has been picked for a corporate management training program, and the message from corporate to me as her manager is to support her by providing opportunities.

the director is telling me to limit those opportunities - essentially to stuff this person has been doing for the past year.

i know that even if i send her the email, she will not respond in writing to confirm, because she is savvy enough to see how that looks, and wont fall for it.

My big dilemma right now is: how do i communicate this to my team member? do i let HR/corporate learning know?

If you are given directive by HR/Corporate Learning and your Director is telling you not to do what they have asked you to do. I would send the email asking for confirmation of her direction with a request for a delivery and read response. She can control the read part she cant control the delivery request. Even if she chooses not to respond it would be documented. And if she doesn't respond I would look into arranging for the person to take the opportunity they need and inform her (copying HR etc) of the move...

If she does respond then just make the team member and HR know you cant facilitate any external opportunity as indicated by said (B)witch.
