The real leader of the 1938 rebellion that start the modern day politics was a black man name St William Grant. But bustamante the pawn shop operator who gave payday loans get the place in history. Garvey got similar and worse treatment including being sent to Britain to die under house arrest.Comment

Bob Marley is at once a culture and a religion. Listen to the emotional outbursts of some his devotees. Gonzo, a youngster from Mexico City declares: “I worship Bob. I smoke pot as I listen to his songs. It is an out of this world experience. Bob’s clarion call was freedom for the entire world. Like Bob, the whole world must smoke marijuana everyday. Garvey's newspaper and writings did raise the conciousness of people in Jamaica despite the fact that the British through nothing but roadblocks in his way. Black leaders around the world have credited him with shaping their ideas, identity and philosophy.

Bob Marley was an exceptional entertainer who wrote some powerful lyrics. This does not justify recogniztion as a national hero. He also wrote lyrics to another woman when he was marrried.
and carried on with women in a most disgraeful fashion. There is nothing National Hero worthy in that.
As a Jamaican, I am proud of the music he created and I hear it all over the world. As a Jamaican, I am also embarrassed by some of his behaviour, the womanizing, the ganja, the way he spoke and conducted himself when speaking with foreign press. He was capable of speaking standard English but chose not to. Towards the end of this interview he speaks about his disdain for the media. There is a time and place for patois. This is not the time or place for it:

Eddie grant did make the same comment..
If we took out the womanising part as a disqualifier.. then there goes Busta....But as a Dr Dudd said the man was a loan shark aswell..
I guess i cant see Bob as a national hero because he would from all accounts been against it...

Maybe: but the general sentiment is it should be legalised ... The day of the police beating rasta for a spiff is gone..... ( I am against legalisation because it would have an impact on how the us sees Ja...and I have no more justification for it to be illegal!)
There was a time there was a roumour that every MP for one parish had a ganja feild...
I cant fault ur sentiment on BOB in terms of the fathering thing.....Comment

Yes Bob Marley's music was responsible for making reggae popular and for this he has received and Order of Merit. That is sufficient. I don't buy for a second that he made Jamaica more popular as a tourist destination. The type of tourist who comes to Jamaica in search of herb and nookie we can do without thank you very much. Ditto for the throngs of women coming to Jamaica in search of the big bamboo as a result of watching how Stella got her Grove back. Sex tourism is not to be encouraged.

Bob Marley has been honoured with an Order or Merit. Also it was the British that made Garvey's life intolerable not Jamaicans. I understand that Bab a Wiyah, a Jamaican, sold him out in the USA. I have read the trial transcript but can't figure out who Bab a Wiyah was. What was Bag a Wiyah's reall name? Why did he catch a fiyah?

Someone asked about Nanny. I had heard that she worked Obeah and caused total confusion. The British soldiers were even seeing things.
Now I don't believe in obeah but I think it's kind of cool for a Jamaican folk hero now a National Hero to be credited with winning a war with obeah. It kind of fits in with our traditional roots culture.
