I think we should scrap the Hero thing or if we have a hero he/she must be truly transformational.

Because he was a honest, matter of fact Jamaican who stood by priciples easily identified with but hardly implemented by many. He was consistently provocative against the normal way most people would barely want to touch on many issues. He delved in logic and took time and thought to deal with issues others would take for granted. For that some thought it boring, but I thought it being as thorough as one could be. He was not hypocritical but he was critical of the role politics manifested itself in Jamaica against Jamaicans rather than for Jamaicans. He identified the bougerois mentality that many took up when thrust by whatever means in positions of authority and wealth. He wrinsed your mind when you thought you were heaven sent. He questioned the powerful and insisted on truth. He sought genuinity of mind and soul. He was a ladies man. He was a charmer. He sang. He wept. He was jolly in laughter. He was a free minded person. He defended liberty. He sought freedom of choice. He held the horns of obstructionism and wrestled it till the path was clear.
He was brave and bold. He had a memory that never forgot the important issues of the past. He was a historian. His voice was clear and sounded young and cheerful.
His diction and command of the English language was un-paralleled. He knew words and what they meant. He spoke patwa. (Mi deh ya)
He wanted us to rest our contempt behind and to recognize the benefits of other models. He wanted us to move forward and to use our brains to make pathways to development. He was a student of Marx. Yet he defended capitalism as the best economic model for success.
He was sued 28 or so times by Manley, by judges, by Butch Stewy by many more and never was he found in contempt, never.
He was a defender of human rights and justice for all.
He was loved by his wife Elaine over 50 more years of marriage. He was loved and acknowledged by many to be philantropic, yet never made a trumpet sound about being generous. Ask Nephew one of his avid callers on radio.
If not for you, but for me, Perkins is my hero, whether national or not acclaimed.
He will remain alive as long as we remember him, as we remember others who have a long and meanigful legacy.
