Nunya, I'm sorry to hear about this re your mom. Mi would a fret too...
KPH in my experience can be a hit or a miss... Can't forget when my niece almost died on us from a serious asthmatic attack while at the hospital. The hospital was incredibly lacking in patient care... it was like you were on your own. This was in the late 1990s, so things may have changed there in the past 15 yrs.
Supplies for surgery is not entirely new.... Matter of fact, doctors turn back patients if they don't come with the supplies for surgery and nuh have the money upfront to pay for hospital care. Mi could go on and on with this one in regards to my aunt who had throat cancer a year ago or so.

my Grandma was supposed to have eye surgery done at KPH few months back. wen she got there dem say dem run out of supplies and therefor cannot do the surgery and give har new date...yet another couple months its free but dam dem mek di poor ooman have go back come back so many times.
Anyone know who fund KPH? Is it the government? private sector? non-profit? All the above? This web site refer to it as a Type A hospital. I have no idea what the rating refers to and can only guess number of bed and specialty care, etc.
The Ministry of Health not doing much for KPH, if the hospital a run out of supplies. Shame. There is a user fee but do not know the rate. The recommendation is to bring your own sanitary products (tp, washing soap, night gown) but the hospital supply bed linen.

back in 1957 when my father got back to Jamaica after medical school he was working at KPH..he was doing a D&C and asked for gloves..they tell him jus wash your hands...he was doing a circumcision and asked for some local they told him we dotn use that here..he only stayed there for 6 months.

When I was a patient at KPH (and yes, that's where my mom is) just over 30 years ago, I was emptying bed pans for the other two women on the ward, and getting them water etc. I was just a kid then and I remember the nurse yelling at us 'fi stap badda har' & 'if wi tink say she a wi maid'...

Talked to my mom last night and she say it no stay so no more. It cleaner, she say, and dem act more professional now... but mi nuh knoa yah... mi a wonda if she jussa say dat cause she no want wi fi foot de expense of de private hospital...
So tomorrow dem a go check out ho much de nuts and bolts cost (mi still cyaa get ova dat to rhatid...) an all being well, she wi have har surgery Friday....

My mother broke her ankle on Christmas day. It was a very bad break and my sister, a doctor, rushed her to Andrews. While there they told my sister that the x-ray was not available (no staff) so she took our mom to Medical Associates. After x-ray and a cast, they felt that she needed screws and a plate in the ankle. Within a week she had the surgery at Medical Associates. She spent one night in the hospital. Cost? I'm not sure yet. Her orthopedic surgeon is Dr. Edgar Abbott who she had been seeing as she broke her other ankle two years ago! Not diabetes in her case .... just rushing and not paying attention \0/
A few weeks before that, a pregnant woman delivered her baby by herself at VJH and soon after lapsed into a coma due to lack of care. I couldn't believe it when I read and when I talked to my cousin the next day, she said it was actually true. An investigation is under way.
My husband's grandfather spent the last 2 weeks of his life at KPH before losing his battle with cancer. I can't forget the near daily trips back and forth from country to see him and spend time with him and taking clean sheets and supplies for him.
I think I've recounted this here before but I cant ever forget, one afternoon watching a nurse do her rounds. Bed to bed she went - taking pressure, checking vitals etc. She took the temperature of each patient using the same thermometer ...

IT TAKES plenty of nerve to work at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) in downtown Kingston.
Public, as it is called by many, is the country's major referral facility and is hailed by local medical professionals as the nation's high seat of medicine. But working there is no cakewalk as the hospital sits in the belly of a war-torn section of the country's capital.
Due to frequent flare-ups of violence in nearby inner city communities, attending to a patient with severe trauma is never more than an hour, or even minutes away.
But even with the level of trauma associated with this public-health facility, which is also swamped daily with milder illnesses such as ear and nose infections, or even the common cold, the hospital continues to offer quality service to patients across the island with professionals going beyond the call of duty on a number of occasions.
The hospital, which has been in existence since 1776, serves 67 per cent of the health population of the country with services including radiology, physiotherapy, radiotherapy, orthopaedics and general and specific surgeries.

"This is where the buck stops, this is where everyone comes for consultancy services, and for technical medical advice, and despite our challenges we continue to be the best in the island," Godfrey Boyd, chief executive officer of the facility told The Gleaner last Wednesday.
"We constantly review our patient load looking at the disease pattern, looking at what services are demanded by our customers, and we try to improve the services as we go along," he added in explaining how the hospital maintained its top position.
He said, however, with the hospital seeing some 3,500 persons per day, it is grappling to cope with the patient overload with limited staff.
The number of patients visiting the facility continues to climb by 30 per cent each year.
"We can never have enough staff for our population. We are seeing in excess of 300,000 persons per year. At any given time we have approximately 950 patients in beds and sometimes it goes way over," he added.
Boyd said of the number of patients 70,000 persons visited the accident and emergency department each year.
"Over the years, our lifestyle has changed and what has happened is that a lot of persons are now seeking medical services. The population has aged and as a result we get a lot more persons coming for our services," he explained.
But he was quick to point out that the dedicated staff that is highly trained has helped the facility, despite the odds, to maintain its effectiveness in the island.
"The staff members are committed and dedicated. They go above and beyond the call of duty. This hospital is referred to as the downtown hospital, so based on its location, some of the persons who come here their behaviours are not the best, so sometimes the staff is put under extreme pressure, and I must give kudos to them," he declared.
The hospital has encountered its fair share of violence. One of the significant ones being the Tivoli incursion in May last year. Terror gripped persons when gunfire shattered the silence echoing through the hospital, the flurry sent many scurrying, dropping to their knees and clinging to each other, but Boyd said the medical team maintained its calm and was able to attend to casualties as they arrived in their numbers.
"One of the things that we do have is a disaster plan and part of that requires that our senior management team keep the persons here, so in the Tivoli incursion the staff members were here. Instead of working for eight hours, they worked up to 12 hours.
"This is a trauma hospital, and as for the Tivoli incursion, whilst it may have been something of a wonder for most of Jamaica, this is what we see every day, so the staff members themselves are seasoned to it," he added.
Boyd said, however, that the staff members are not left on their own as the hospital is sufficiently equipped to help the professionals handle the stresses that accompany the job.

"Apart from the population being traumatised the staff members are also traumatised and so we have psychologists, psychiatrists, we even have a resident chaplin, and we are assisted by other professionals from other health-care facilities. We do counselling sessions and rap sessions as we try to help to keep the staff focused and help them to somewhat dissipate the amount of stress that they encounter," he explained.
He said as a senior staff member, he has not been spared the trauma associated with the many incidents but always finds comfort in the counselling sessions.
Senior medical officer for KPH, Dr Patrick Bhoorasingh, spoke highly of the facility saying it is the best training institution for medical professionals.
He added that the facility attracted staff due to the quality services that it offers to the public.
"This is a training institution, we train all categories of staff here and all the staff are upwardly mobile in terms of acquiring knowledge, and they will go beyond the call to acquire knowledge," he boasted.
"We offer nursing services - general and specialised services - for every speciality that doctors need. The nurses are also trained in that kind of speciality to deliver nursing care to our patients," director of nursing services, Edith Allwood Anderson, said as she spoke highly of her nursing team.
"Our team is committed as we put patient care first," she added.
KPH's external facility, Victoria Jubilee Hospital, is also a training ground for health-care workers.
The largest maternity hospital in the English-speaking Caribbean, which is located only metres away from KPH, is referred to as the birthplace of the nation, with some 2,000 patients visiting per day.

This takes me back to my theory that I floated some weeks ago about the RGD. I think they could do as needed to better perform their jobs but I feel strongly they've no proper resources.
