Di cans are usually very rusted out from being around for a long time, if yuh pick it up yuh cyan crush it inna yuh hand an don't get cut. Also, memba dat dem yah ah city goats, ghetto goats, gully goats. Dem walk bout di streets an graze here an there. Lotta times dem wi ova di dump land, di odda side ah di gully, ah feed pan garbage. Yuh may shush dem, or fling ah rockstone at dem fi get dem fi leave yuh plants alone from time tuh time. Everbaddi know ah whofa goats dem is, soh noh baddi noh too really F wid dem, caa di owners are usually crazy an wi com chop yuh up if yuh injure, kill or tief wan ah dem goats.

Di goats dem pretty smart tuh. Mi si dead dawg whe get hit by cyar all di time ah Kingston, but mi cyan ever memba seeing ah dead goat whe get hit by ah cyar? Dem know how fi cross di busy Kingston streets by demself. Dem usually find dem way back home com evening time, or sumetimes di man wi send him son goh get dem if dem tek too long fi com back home.

Too bad ....we lived in town, in our community there was always one or two goats farms. It was a very closed community, only the most adventurous goat teef would ever try a ting.
I can't remember my dad ever losing an animal that way.

Our goats were stall kept and did not have a place to roam, so we had no problems, except sometimes the feed bag got eaten.

Now tuffy gotta disagree with u... We had a couple gioats tjat climbed treees to eat the young chicklets that died.. My father would put them there for the john crow and other beasts of the air to get rather than our wild dogs!
also we did have a cat that buggered another cat.. and several young bullocks who attempted to hump other bulls... !

As JaKid seh ....you had a hell of a farm life.
First i have ever heard of goats enjoying flesh.
I know they will search trash and possible taste cook food, but they won't eat it normally unless they are very hungry.
Flesh I have never heard off.......but then lol ....unlike your dad not many folks set out food fi john crow!

....and your cats......my word......lock dung dat heathen farm!

if u have dogs, u dont want them to develop a taste for other farm animals... We had a couple dogs that killed a goat after eating a kid that died.. We started to leave the carcasses in trees to prevented it happening... We had to kill the dogs..

life sure got interesting up in dem malvern hills, wallie.

we were subsistence farmers, so our animal complement was small and the range of behaviours more limited we had pigs, goats and chickens. another of my chores (a favourite one) was to collect eggs, always fun because our chickens weren't cooped always laid them in the most unexpected places - you sometimes had to think like a chicken and remember any strange place you saw them to get a clue to where they lay eggs. often you had to also kind of listen out for that strange drawn out squawk they made that was a signal they just laid, and sometimes the egg was still warm when you picked it up.

Interesting. You should develop a Blog for Farming in Jamaica where folks from different era and areas can share stories.
My experience was nothing like that nine times out of ten none of our animals interacted <span style="font-style: italic">(except occasional dog vs stray cats)</span>, even though all of this was done way less than an acre. With the usual mongrels and stray cats around.

We were aware though that once a dog developed a taste for the fowl flesh it might take a bird or two. We were told this by our parents, but we never had to put down a brown mongrel because of it.

I can well imagine why you can't live in the USA or Canada after admitting that you lay out bird sacrifice and casually put down the household dawgs.....two of them at that?

BUSHY PARK, St Catherine:
PUT DOWN the mouse and the keyboard, and give those social network sites a break, for there is a new place for socialising in town, well not exactly. It's at the Thetford Great House and Farm, in Bushy Park, St Catherine, and is called FarmVille Jamaica Live, a social farming club, whose objective is to create an awareness of the importance of agriculture and the need for food security, and networking among participating farmers.

&quot;FarmVille Jamaica Live is a new and innovative social farming club that consists of different activities aimed to get persons living in Jamaica and other countries involved in farming,&quot; the website says. It continues: &quot;FarmVille Jamaica Live will teach participants and the public more about agriculture through an interactive farming programme.&quot;

&quot;The objectives are to bring something new and dynamic to the Jamaican market that will benefit the members of the farming club and the agriculture industry, and to strongly endorse the Go Green global campaign.&quot;

It is not really about profits, as it is not farming on a large scale. The participants are being offered the opportunity to plant, grow and reap different crops while socialising with other farmers. &quot;They will learn where food come from and how those products get from the farm to their dinner plates while having fun,&quot; FarmVille said.

<span style="font-weight: bold">monthly lease</span>

This family-operated venture caters to three types of farmers, active, absentee and global, who pay a monthly lease and maintenance fee of $1,000, $1,500, and US$20, respectively per 10x10 plot. The registration fee is $500, and US$10 for global farmers. The plots may also be leased for three, six or 12 months. A 10 per cent discount for every plot leased is offered to companies leasing a large number of plots. All fees are non-refundable, and there will be an additional charge for seeds and fertilisers.

While it is expected that farmers will tend to their crops at least once weekly, absentee farmers can arrange for their crops to be reaped on their behalf and delivered. They have the option of taking home their produce, bartering excess with others farmers or selling their crops, which could be watermelon, peanuts, corn, sweet pepper, sweet corn, red peas, callaloo, pumpkin, cucumber, sorrel, okra, tomatoes, ginger, carrot, onions, and potatoes.

Smack in the heart of the sprawling property is the fairly preserved Thetford Great House, on a hill from which there is a panoramic view of the lands around it and beyond. A river runs by the property which also has a dirt and drag racetrack, which is available for rental.

A major feature of FarmVille is Farm Vibes on Sundays, where there is a series of fun and game activities, such as farm tours, dominoes, cards, chess and other board games, treasure hunts, motor sports, bicycle and quad rides, races around the property, not to mention the most exciting of them all, drifting.

&quot;Persons are invited to spend Sundays in a new and innovative way, farming and having fun with no worries about food and refreshments, as they are always available,&quot; Kevin Scott, one of the directors, said.

According to Scott, &quot;There are plans to renovate Thetford Great House and also to upgrade the track, and add other attractions to provide an agrotourism product.&quot; The plans include the construction of log cabins for stay-overs.
