bobo hill and any number of encampments are still there...ras is still there...the message lives within the heart, not in the analysis of scholars and books...

jamaicans are not able to appreciate the global impact of this movement...only ones outside of jamaica;

it has spread farther faster than any religion on earth

R U kidding? Which world are you speaking about? Consistent? In what form? Have you gone to other parts of the world to <span style="font-weight: bold">witness </span>this consistency of which you so boldly speak?

The very fact that you would compare a sect that is so young and uncharted when compared to those such as Islam and Judaism, for example speaks volumes. Sorry, but one rebelling man/woman who decide not to comb/brush their hair and eat pork in an effort to adopt the LOOK of rasta in some remote country does not equate to spreading the "word" or expanding across continents in any stretch of the imagination.

Not that I agree with this but I often wonder why in Ethiopia, most roll their eyes at the very thought of Rastafarianism. Lack of understanding perhaps?

why?
it is influential all over the globe...why can it not be compared?
actually it compares more favorably and has a far more realistic philosophy than the sky heaven sky god philosophy of those religions

you see 'jesus' was a jew...those closer to the person will not accept him the way others will...in fact his fellow jews denounced him & had him killed...yet many jamaicans 2000 years later would give their lives for him...
same reason marcus garvey was not succesful in jamaica but formed the largest black movement in the history of the world when he went to america...

rasta has changed in terms of it is no longer just a renegade sect of afro (& indo)-jamaicans in the hills of st catherine, jamaica that formed their own compound and decided to live outside of the establishment...

it has spread to every walk of life, to every continent, to every race, to every socio-economic demographic on earth...

but its core messaqge has not changed...
rejection of babylon system and acceptance of the afrikan primacy of civilization...
praises to the most high, afrikan redemption, liberation & repatriation...I-ses to jah rastafari..a return to zion;

Yeah I was in the victoria station concourse shopping eating a KFC twister and they had Peter Tosh tune playing as Muzik in the back ground!.... (KFC spices all original came from Jamaica...) At that moment I felt old for the first time....

the first "locks men" in Jamaica were of East Indian Extraction. Adhedrents of shiva..But that seems to be long forgotten much like shearer and sangster...

spontaneous vision of the founders...especially leonard howell, archibald dunkley, marcus garvey, etc.

at the center is afrika...that has not changed...
its roots is resistance against the colonial brainwash which indoctrinated the black population with white supremacy thinking;
rasta resisted this religion of white supremacy & replaced it with the religion of self-knowledge and self-love...that is the core of rastafari and will not change;

the foundation is pinnacle community...rejection of white-christ graven image doctrine...rejection of the dominant phiosophy of the day (and today) that afrika was a backward wasteland of heathens who need some hair straightening and skin bleaching and white & arab man religions to civilize them;
rejection of the world system which says you can have infinite 'growth' on finite resources (hence the self-sufficient compound - which the powers that be were compelled to raid & destroy- as it was a challenge to their system of slavery)...

if anyone claims they are a rastafari and does not respect the principle of the afrikan zion & strength...they are not in tune with the root & foundation of the movement

one of the original ras was an indian...and leonard howell was also known as ganguru maraj- an indian name;
there have definitely been indian influences, but the main inspiration for the locks was the mau mau movement of kenya;
the original rases did not have the wearing of locks as a main principle

Do you really know the facts of what takes place in Sheshemane? How people live there? What their "neighbors" think about them?

Just so you know, one of my brothers and his family migrated to Sheshemane 17 years ago, from Manchester, England, and has bent my ear about it for years. He would be surprised to hear that there are still those who romanticize about it and would be the first to tell you that you have to go there to really understand. He'd welcome the opportunity to chat about it.

By saying SOME ethiopians, is far from generalizing.

My own experience with many who claim Ras as their faith is that they have little knowledge of who these people are or what they had to say. But to be fair, that state of affairs (not knowing your history) is not limited only to Rastafari.

of course they did...

i have seen picture of locks from ancient nubia & egypt thousands of years ago...
but the inspiration as to why many rastafarians adopted the style was the mau mau rebellion

would love to...but as in everything else, there will be those who have had negative experiences and those who have had positive...just as anywhere else;

to some people jamaica is paradise...to others it is hell; it depends on your station & outlook
