Should we still say Columbus "Discovered" Jamaica?

I like saying it this way (see below) versus saying discovered....

This day in Jamaican History – On May 3rd, 1494 Christopher Columbus set foot on Jamaica when he claimed it for Spain during his second voyage to the New World. He named the island St. Iago. The Spanish established plantations to supply their ships. Disease & exploitation by the Spanish led to the extinction of the Tainos by the middle of the 17th century. This led to the importing slaves from Africa to work the plantations.

the lexicon must change...

he did not discover anything...it is impossible to discover a place where people live and others have already visited...
more accurate to say he was probably the first european to encamp there

Even way back in the day when I went to high school in Kingston, my history teacher insisted on saying,, &quot;when the Arawaks discovered Columbus on our shores&quot;

if Columbus never came, and if the Tainos never dead off, and if dem never import black slaves form africa....then likely none of us would be here now calling ourselves proud Jamaicans

So for what its worth little Chris did play a big part in the jamaica we know today. We mite as well play along and say him discovered it. All the places that were &quot;discovered&quot; where never really discovered neways its just a matter of formality...

wah oonuh fi worry bout is the tings happen today here and now and tap belly ache over the past.

to the best of my knowledge, even thought the text book say chris discovered JA, it also stated that when he got there he say ppl.....so even as a child i knew that that word discovered was not to be taken literally. it just simple meant that the Europeans didnt know this part of world existed so to them it was a big discovery.... since the Europeans were the scholars and book printers of the day they printed it to say they discovered this place....the did not leave out the part that they did find natives there....

so wats the big deal....Hell i was the first in my family to discover ja.com, wen i got here i saw all of u ppl squabbling about gay rites and racism. it will be forever recorded in my family history that Vegas discovered ja.com

Less rape for Jamaica than in North America. If rape were rampant, the Jamaican of today would more resemble the Amerikkkan black, more mix, more cafe' au lait. I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with either, just Amerikkkan blacks have more wide-spread color range.
