The old Gleaner was on Harbour Street at Princess Street. The Coast Guard was at the bottom of Princess Street along with the Collector Generals &amp; Custom Department. The Gleaner moved up to North Street in the late 60's or early 70's. </div></div>

A lot of squatting going on - my sister have a house somewhere up Red Hills way and she has not been there and the people more or less capture the place. They rigged up the light pole at the gate and everyone run wires to it. Me say if you ever see har light bill. JPS caan catch the damn thieves. As to har water the bill big so till it's going to buss. They capture people land beside har and building brick house. These people caan be evicted. I doan know how the landlord on Duke Street get eviction notice - must be well connected politically. Rest assured these people who live there dem not going no where.

Yes, dats true my sis ready to walk away but then me remind what bout the US$ whey me dig give har to help with the building of the house. (She did promised me to build an apartment for my use when me visit JA). Aye sah all a dat money down the drain -12K. Damn wutless people dem, dem would thief out the red out egg.

I just Google Mapped the address and it points to the corner of Duke and Harbour Street. Water Lane is right there - wonder if is on Water Lane but the &quot;address&quot; is Duke Street

I remembered because the lower part of Duke Street had the Embassy, and I used to work @ Myers, Fletcher &amp; Gordon and it was located at 36 Duke Street. AJ Nicholson had an office on Duke Street right off Harbour Street, and Lufthansa Airlines had their office right across the street from Broad bent Eye doctor. </div></div>

Evicted tenants beg for more time

MORE than 80 persons were yesterday morning left homeless after they were evicted from a large tenement premises on Duke Street in Kingston.

The residents — who all occupied wooden and zinc structures at 118-120 Duke Street, an area they referred to as 'Big Yard' — were forced out of their homes by at least 20 young men, reportedly hired by the new owner of the premises.

The eviction started about 10:00 am, residents said.

The workmen were accompanied by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, who at intervals had to intervene to prevent irate residents from mobbing the men.

The unnamed owner of the premises, who residents said had recently bought the property, was not present at the eviction, his workmen said.

While the residents confessed that they had been asked to leave more than a week ago, they complained that the deadline was too short for them to make alternative living arrangements.

Many of them, like 43-year-old Joycelyn Smith, had for decades called the property home.

&quot;Them give us notice but we don't have anywhere to go. People live here for years; them born and grow here,&quot; Smith said before making reference to children.

&quot;Me have seven children, where am I going to put them? Nobody is going to pick us up with so many children and give us a place to live,&quot; she said. &quot;So we asking for a little more time. Just some time to put things together and get out of this place. Don't be so hard on we.&quot;

The woman watched as the young men demolished her neighbour's wooden dwelling. She grimaced in despair as she explained that her premises was next in line.

According to Smith, she was paying rent for her small wooden house. She confessed, however, that the payments stopped when the landlord died years ago.

She proposed that the new owner sell the premises to the residents, and have them pay for it over time.

Barbara Henry, 45, who said she has also been living at the premises for more than 30 years, clutched her single suitcase as she condemned the operation.

The mother of five was also bewildered.

&quot;We agree that they gave us notice long time, but right now we don't have anywhere to go,&quot; Henry said, explaining that years ago her mother — having moved from Montego Bay in St James — occupied the premises after finding employment in the area.

&quot;And you know, children follow their parents, so I did, and my children come up and follow me. So is years I have been living here,&quot; she said, noting that she is a mother of three, all of whom were born on the premises.

&quot;I don't know where I will go with them, but I am just leaving everything to Jesus. He will help me to find somewhere,&quot; she said, offering comfort to herself.

When the Jamaica Observer arrived at the location, residents said that Desmond McKenzie, member of parliament for the West Kingston constituency, had visited and had promised to ask the owner for an extension of the eviction deadline.

The Observer, however, was unable to confirm their claims as up to late yesterday evening McKenzie's phone numbers rang without answer.
