<span style="font-weight: bold">Coachloads of jobless people brought in to work unpaid on river pageant as part of Work Programme </span>



A group of long-term unemployed jobseekers were bussed into London to work as unpaid stewards during the diamond jubilee celebrations and<span style="font-weight: bold"> told to sleep under London Bridge</span> before working on the river pageant.

Two jobseekers, who did not want to be identified in case they lost their benefits, said they had to camp under London Bridge the night before the pageant. They told the Guardian they had to change into security gear in public, <span style="font-weight: bold">had no access to toilets for 24 hours, and were taken to a swampy campsite outside London after working a 14-hour shift in the pouring rain </span>on the banks of the Thames on Sunday.

So 30 of the workers weren't paid and 50 of them received £2.80/hour. Is that minimum wage or supm? Wonder what that works out to be in Canadian funds...?

And they justify it all by saying that it's part of the workers' training and assessment for working the Olympics.

Now while I can understand certain volunteerism to be beneficial to gaining employment, I can't help but think that they took unfair advantage of the unemployed. And they compounded it by having them sleeping outdoors, without proper protection from the elements and no sanitary facilities....

They should definitely lose the contract for the Olympics...

they say it is part of the work program ..so sounds to me that mean they are getting benefits and any pay for this was in addition to their regular benefits.

I'm treating the story as the full facts and will modify my opinion when/if more pertinent information come forward.

Any benefits that the workers get couldn't possibly preclude them having a safe place to sleep and a toilet, at the very least, surely?

Seems to me that Close Protection is the one getting all the food... so smaddy need to bax dat shyte outta dem mout yes...

Work Programme is Work Experience. You don't get paid for that.
The 'benefits' they get for being unemployed has nothing to do with working for free.

Work Programme is Work Experience. You don't get paid for that.

the unemployment benefits are not conditional on them entering these work programs?

What!! Thanks for sharing this Derek. It just isn't right and I hope the publicity will make them do something about it.

These are the unemployment benefits recipients right? Did you ever live in London? Has this happened with other events?
