Last night, I heard that the gunman shot his former boss who fired him a year ago and that all other shootings were collateral damage from the police shooting at the gunman. I did not hear it on the news with my own ears so I cannot say how accurate the account is.

I know it may sound sick, but I find it comforting that he had a target.

One of those injured by police told the Guardian that officers appeared to fire &quot;randomly&quot; as they confronted Jeffrey Johnson, 58, minutes after a workplace dispute escalated into a chaotic shootout in one of the busiest parts of Manhattan.

Reports suggest that while Johnson drew his gun when he was confronted by officers, he did not fire; all those injured appear to have been shot by police. The New York police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, said officers had no choice but to act as they did: police discharged 14 rounds and the gunman died at the scene.

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said all nine bystanders wounded in Friday's Empire State Building shooting had been hit with police gunfire, CNN reported Saturday morning.

According to Kelly, of the nine wounded, three suffered gunshot wounds and six were hit by fragments.

yup welcome to the big apple.

after 9/11 most of the buildings put up concrete barriers on the sidewalks to prevent truck/car bombs. some of them are obvious and some of them are decorative flower pots.

the 9 victims got hit with shrapnel or ricochet bullets.

the suspect had 6 other bullets in his briefcase, him lucky regular citizens never get a chance fi dust him out. the only reason he didn't blend into the crowds is because a construction worker up above followed him.

After the round of senseless shootings in the city this past summer mi get the feeling that people tired a the gunman bizness.

Yes, Gen, I saw in the second article that most of the injured were hit by fragments. Imagine if other bystanders had guns too (like the NRA and others say they should) and fired on a busy street. It would be like the wild west.

Chances are if a LAWABIDING citizen, not a gang banger, had a gun, that the perpetrator would have been killed and disarmed at the initial scene of first shooting. It's obvious that you think police are somehow good shots and make rational decisions, just because they are police. They don't always make good decisions and not all are good with their service weapon...Yeah, good thing a LAWABIDING citizens was not armed, maybe 9 innocent people may have been shot?

It's always easy to blame police for everything that goes wrong but I think that when someone pulls a gun on a cop, that cop is thinking about one thing.... &quot;I need to survive this at all cost so I can go home to my kids.&quot;

Police could have probably done a better job here but once a gun is drawn, especially by someone who has already shot someone, all bets are off the table.

True, but those that are hit by stray bullets are thinking the same thing, and the police are civil servants, just like me, they take an oath to protect and serve. The are paid to protect the public. They are trained to react in circumstances like this. They are supposed to be professionals. A STRAY BULLET (meaning one) while tragic, is understandable in these circumstances, but nine people injured is unacceptable. They screwed up big time. The ones involved in this shooting need more inservice training...and of course going back to my initial response, more reason that an armed citizen could not have done any worse than these clowns.

Yes I agree, this was handled poorly. Seems like the training went out the window. Thank God (so far) there were nine injuries and no deaths in regard to the innocent civilians.

However, ask a mother who has had her missing chid returned to her by the police and she will sing their praises. Then read today's Observer and see the story of the police who shot a young taxi driver and the poor mother's statement.

Police - Pray you never need them, but if you do, pray you get a good one.

lol The wife is a better shot than me, that's why I behave myself.
