The hostility towards Les Anglais is higher in Montreal than say Quebec City. There are historical reasons for this. The British had troops in Quebec City for a long time so some of the population is descended from French women and British men. Quebec City is where the Irish orphan children landed and the French families who adopted them permitted them to keep their names. They are culturally French but still have the Irish names. There is a celebration every year remembering the Celtic roots of a segment of the population (not sure what %).

In Quebec City, people bend over backwards to let you know you can speak English if you like....they know on which side their bread is buttered. I can see Quebec City pulling out of a separatist Quebec but not Montreal where if you try to start out speaking English you are met with "Quoi?".
