thanks for your kind words st bess. we spoke of ledgisters, my aunty had a best friend who was one, mi ask her who she went to school with when she was a child.

as for the rain, i was fretting because it came down really hard that morning, and mi did only have the 2 days so i was hoping i would not have to delay going on the high line, and thank goodness things eased up

i understand about being close to but not going to tourist attractions, couldnt tell the last time i went to cn tower tho i work near there

so, my aunt had got tickets for Wynton Marsalis. or so she said. long time i hadnt been to a jazz concert, and tho marsalis isnt really my cup of tea (found his jazz to be a touch too intellectual for me), i thought it would be good to say i had seen him in performance. (last jazz great i'd seen was miles davis back in the 80s).

this was friday nite and we got a ride from one of my younger cousins, he's 25, finishing college, hoping to become a cop, why oh why!

anyhoo, mi love show off in front of the young people, so me start ask him bout kanye and kim kardashian, and all kind of fawt. cousin think kim deh wid summuch man areddy she a no nuttn special, but im no waan judge kanye. then cousin tell me seh jay z was in town that nite to open the new brookly stadium and i wished for a moment we were going there instead of to see wynton marsalis. then again, i think i like only maybe one of jay z song dem so juss as well. plus, i not in dat demographic.

turns out, as i said before, that marsalis was NOT there, just his music, which was being danced to by the Garth Fagan (a yaadie ) dance troupe.

some of the performances were wonderful, especially those that incorporated caribbean moves. some of them was, imo, a waste of marsalis' music because of a lot of static or slow moves to lively music.

there was one phenomenal pas de deux (a dat dem call it in jazz dance?), slow, langurous and slightly erotic, the female part danced by an older dancer who went barechested. it got huge applause, i got chills from it. if the show still going on at BAM, i recommend any NYers to check it out just for that one dance.

my licke cousin, only 15, dragged against his will by his granny (my aunty) to an artsy fartsy BAM show. she's determined to make him a sophisticate. it's a tough road


mi ask him after the show what he thought, he said &quot;it was alrite&quot;. i wonder if bare chested lady dancer had an impact, lol.

after the show came my only disagreeable moment in my trip. i wanted to go somewhere to eat after the show, u know, extend the experience of being out and about. could i get anyone interested???? \o/

i said i'd buy my young cousin a burger, caw he got shanghaied into coming to the concert and hadnt had time to eat. mi ha waan map of the area a try find the nearest burger place, mi a try ask aunty whipawt this or that restaurant deh, she no know, she basically start walk in the direction of the nearest subway. my mother, who reverts to being &quot;the younger sister&quot; and not wanting to challenge my aunty, doesnt want me to make a fuss - read the signs, aunty wants to go home, lets go home.

i was so frustrated, i missed the crowds at the bookstore we passed, and the glimpse of ziadie smith inside signing latest copies of her work.

in the end, i asked my other cousin, the one who went with us to high line, if she would stay with me, and she said yes. i bid adieu to aunty, mother and boy cousin and set off to find a dessert place.

we found Cafe Lafayette. mi never tek a picture of the outside, so here is an internet pic


so, this place is a step down to kind of basement, the size of a closet, packed with people, cheek by jowl. this was about 10 oclock in the evening. we grabbed a table by the door, squeezed in, and ordered dessert.

coffee and apple pie with ice cream for me. nice, light crust, not too sweet.


cousin ordered crepe with nutella and banana. it was heavenly, omg.

we stayed only about an hour, long enuf for the waitress to discover my cousin is deaf (she kept asking her to shift her cup and kept repeating it until i clued in). turns out her brother's wife is not deaf, but does sign language and missionary work with deaf people. so we had a bit of conversation about that. sumall world, eh?

on the way home, while waiting for the train, my cousin asked me about the bookstore and did i notice the line up. i said, &quot;nooo....&quot; that's when another person waiting for the train piped up and said &quot;that would be ziadie smith&quot; and showed me the book she bought. we ended up talking. subway person didnt get the book signed, caw she hadnt read it yet, and didnt know if she would like it (i get the idea she'd toss the book if she didnt like it, so no point getting ziadie's signature, i woulda got it signed no matter what - a mean, is bloody ziadie smith!!! )

anyway, subway patron was a black woman with natural hair, kinda solangey style. she said she originally from georgia, studying in ny for her phd (i think, or maybe it was masters). we had quite a nice chat.

is it cause i'm older i find it easier to talk to strangers? or has the new brooklyn got me enchanted?

lol, you're a poet and don't know it. it was water in that bottle. believe it or not, i don't like getting drunk, and especially not while i'm out. if we were having a full dinner, i'd have prolly had a glass of wine, though.

so saturday. last full day of the trip. woke up a little worn out. dang, i don't have the bounce back as in my younger days.

agenda for the day - explore more of brooklyn. buy my aunty a present (she chose makeup sold at Macy's). go with aunty to brooklyn farmer's market. go with cousin to brooklyn library where they had a mini display of fashion drawings. pass by the chili fiesta at the botanical gardens. visit another cousin's business place.

now that i typed it all out, i realize how ridiculous that itinerary was. jeez, who do i think i am, inbanana jones?

i thought i'd make it easy on myself. i recycled my outfit from the nite before.

apparently, 9:30 is early in downtown brooklyn. macy's opens at 10 am, so we walked around to kill some time. it was quiet and peaceful. i took some shots of buildings in the area.

mi aunty seh dis use to be a conway, and i got a flash of nostalgia for two blouse mi buy at conway 5 years ago and wore till dem couldnt wear no more.
