There are 538 electoral votes at stake 50% = 269. Winner gets 270If you don't fight for what you deserve, you deserve what you get.

So the Republicans still control the house? I really don't have a clear grasp of this aspect of the US system. In Canada or Jamaica, whoever gets the majority of seats becomes the head of state. US seems to have a 3 tiered system:
- vote fo President
- electoral college votes
- votes for seats in House of Representatives
It's very complicated. Add primaries into the mix and it's a hopeless case to understand it. Does the average American understand all of this?

President is the executive branch.
Congress is the legislative branch
Supreme Court is the judicial branch..

The presidential election is indirect.Originally posted by Tropicana View PostSo the Republicans still control the house? I really don't have a clear grasp of this aspect of the US system. From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elector...United_States)):
Although ballots list the names of the presidential candidates, voters within the 50 states and Washington, D.C. actually choose electors for their state when they vote for President and Vice President. These presidential electors in turn cast electoral votes for those two offices. Even though the aggregate national popular vote is calculated by state officials and media organizations, the national popular vote is not the basis for electing a President or Vice President.

If there were a viable third party candidate who could win some larger states, it could be possible for the overall "winner" not to reach 270 electoral votes.Originally posted by kia027 View PostGoes to Congress to decide

since its winner take all its hardly likely that a 3rd party candidate could concentrate enough in one or two states to only carry those states and not othersOriginally posted by Blackstar* View PostIf there were a viable third party candidate who could win some larger states, it could be possible for the overall "winner" not to reach 270 electoral votes. When its hot in the jungle of peace I go swimming in the ocean of love.....
