Oscar Pistorius Case: Police Reportedly Eye Bloody Cricket Bat as Evidence
Police in South Africa investigating the shooting death of model Reeva Steenkamp, allegedly by boyfriend and Paralympics champion Oscar Pistorius, consider a bloody cricket bat to be a central piece of evidence, according to South Africa's City Press newspaper.
Pistorius, 26, was arrested Thursday and charged with killing Steenkamp, 29, at his home in the South African capitol of Pretoria. His family says the shooting was an accident. He is in jail awaiting a bail hearing Tuesday.
The City Press reported Sunday that police are investigating different scenarios involving the bat. Among them is the possibility that the flat-fronted bat was used in a violent argument before the shooting.
The paper also reported that Pistorius might have first shot Steenkamp in the bedroom, and that she possibly fled to the bathroom where she was shot three more times through the door.
Pistorius' best friend, Justin Divaris, told reporters that he received a call from a distraught Pistorius just before 4 a.m. Feb. 14 in which he said there had been a terrible accident, and that he shot Steenkamp.
If convicted, Pistorius could face at least 25 years in jail. A memorial service for Steenkamp will be held in Port Elizabeth Tuesday evening. Her body has been flown back for the service before being cremated, her family told local media.
Speaking with the media for the first time since her daughter's death in a phone interview with The Sunday Times from her home in Seaview, Port Elizabeth, June Steenkamp said, "Why? Why my little girl? Why did this happen? Why did he do this? What for?"

Was Oscar Pistorius jealous of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp’s ex boyfriend?
As South African authorities try to assuage possible motivations of the gruesome death of Reeva Steenkamp at the hands of South Africa’s ‘Blade Runner,’ Oscar Pistorius speculation has mounted that Pistorius may have harbored jealousy towards his girlfriend’s former boyfriend, South African rugby player Francois Hougaard.Although the pair were no longer dating they had remained best friends and even stayed in touch through twitter. Something that may have angered what some believe to be a jealous Pistorius thought to have issues with anger issues and wanting to always retain control.
Shortly after Steenkamp was fatally shot, Hougaard posted a picture of himself with his ex and Pistorius having meal out with friends.
“Happier times with special people,” Hougaard tweeted. “We all miss you so much Reevs.”
Yesterday Hougaard’s agent Lorinda Voges said: “Our client will not answer any questions regarding Reeva Steenkemp or Oscar Pistorius at this stage as this is still an ongoing investigation and this whole sad ordeal has got nothing to do with him.”
Oscar Pistorius’ father Arnold also came out with the following statement:
“We are also battling to come to terms with Oscar being charged with murder. The lives of our entire family have been turned upside down for ever by this unimaginable human tragedy, and Reeva’s family have suffered a terrible loss.
“After consulting with legal representatives we deeply regret the allegation of premeditated murder. We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation.”
According to South African newspaper Die Burger, Steenkamp received a text message on the night of her death from Francois Hougaard. Aggravating suggestions of jealousy of the much ballyhooed South African hunk who also has his own impressive fan base and loyalty (and still his legs whilst we’re at it, in the event that played a part in his Pistorius’ alleged jealous rant) an iPad was found on the floor of Pistorius’s bedroom the night of the murder.
Francois Hougaard is said to have a Facebook page which has almost 15,000 likes. He has over 67,000 followers on Twitter. Was Oscar Pistorius jealous of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp's ex boyfriend?New evidence seems to suggest so.
Did SMS cause Oscar and Reeva fight? One of the latest rumours to surface over the weekend following the fatal shooting of Reeva Steenkamp at her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius’s home, was that the couple were fighting over an SMS she had received.
It was reported that Steenkamp had received an SMS from Springbok rugby player Francois Hougaard, stated Die Burger.
Hougaard could not be reached for comment but he had earlier released a statement saying he was not in any way involved with the shooting.
Meanwhile, The Mirror newspaper reported on Saturday that Hougaard was a close friend of both Pistorius and Steenkamp.
He had also dated Steenkamp before she started going out with Pistorius and had continued to be in a “close friendship” with Hougaard.
Hougaard pulled out of a game for the Vodacom Bulls on Friday.
In a twist, Nelson Mandela’s personal assisstant Zelda la Grange tweeted after the shooting: “Have you heard ¬rumours about a rugby player alleged to be involved somehow? We all have.”
The tweet was retweeted by many journalists.Last edited by Tropicana; 02-18-2013, 09:08 PM.

Nike, Oakley distance themselves from Oscar Pistorius
Two major sponsors, Oakley and Nike, distanced themselves from Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius on Monday after the South African sports star was charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend.
Oakley, the eyewear maker, suspended its contract with Pistorius. And Nike, which sells shoes and other athletic gear, said it has no plans to use him in future ad campaigns.
Pistorius lost both of his legs in childhood. Racing on carbon-fiber blades, he was the first amputee athlete to run at the world championships in 2011, and he made history competing in the London Olympics last year. His success at overcoming hardship made him popular with South Africans, and a desirable pitchman for advertisers.
On Thursday, he was arrested and charged with shooting his girlfriend to death in his home in South Africa. His family has denied that he murdered his girlfriend, the model Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius' agent has cancelled the athlete's future scheduled races.
Nike Inc. confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday that it had no plans to use Pistorius in future campaigns. Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins declined to say whether Nike had previously had any plans for Pistorius, or whether it will remove current advertising that includes him.
A 2007 Nike Internet ad showing Pistorius starting to sprint in his blades with the caption: "I am the bullet in the chamber" had already been pulled.
Wilkins said the wording in the 2007 campaign "was in reference to Oscar's speed and performance on the track. Nike felt it was appropriate to take the ad down from Oscar's website recognizing the sensitivities of the situation."
Later on Monday, Oakley, in an emailed statement, said that "in light of the recent allegations, Oakley is suspending its contract with Oscar Pistorius, effective immediately." The California company, a unit of Italian glasses and sunglasses maker Luxottica Group, has been associated with Pistorius since 2009, according to the athlete's website.
Pistorius' website, which has been posting statements from his manager and his family, still shows other Nike ads, as well as logos from Nike, Oakley and other companies.
Beaverton, Ore.-based Nike, which spent $800 million US on endorsements in its last fiscal year, has found itself in tricky situations with athletes before. It dropped Lance Armstrong in October 2012 after charges of widespread doping on his cycling teams. Armstrong has since admitted to doping and has been stripped of his seven Tour de France victories, and was also dropped by other sponsors.
But Nike stood by golfer Tiger Woods after he admitted to infidelities and went to rehab for sex addiction, and restarted a relationship with football player Michael Vick once he had served time for illegal dog-fighting.

Oscar Pistorius 'involved in freak gun accident' weeks before Reeva Steenkamp was shot
The disabled Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who stands accused of murdering his girlfriend in a Valentine's Day shooting, was involved in a freak gun accident just weeks before Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead, it emerged today.
According to reports, Pistorius, who is nicknamed ‘blade runner’, was dining in a busy restaurant when the gun accidentally went off, nearly hitting a friend's foot.
The incident allegedly happened last month during a dinner with friends and Pistorius’s 29-year-old model girlfriend.
The paralympic star was reportedly examining the gun, which belonged to a friend, when it snagged on his trousers and went off, narrowly missing a friend’s foot.
Boxer Kevin Lerena, who was part of the dining party, told South Africa’s Beeld newspaper: “I got a huge fright, because the bullet hit the ground just centimetres from my foot. I must emphasise that the gun belonged to one of Pistorius’s friends.
“Oscar just wanted to look at the gun, and it sort of snagged on his pants, releasing the safety catch. A shot went off. I wouldn’t call him negligent, it was just an accident. He apologised to me for days afterwards.”
The latest revelations came as it emerged that South African police are investigating whether the murder of Reeva Steenkamp could be connected to the use of performance-boosting steroids.
According to allegations in a British newspaper, officers who searched the home of the Olympic athlete found steroids.
Some reports have also claimed that police have specifically requested that the runner's blood be tested for steroids.
The Sun newspaper claims that a source close to the investigation told them that steroids were found in the runner's home along with evidence of heavy drinking.
According to the paper, police are now investigating the possibility that Pistorius may have killed his girlfriend in the midst of a so-called 'roid rage' - an explosion of aggression and hostility prompted by the use of anabolic steroids.
Some studies have found that use of certain steroids can cause hypomania and increased aggression.
Pistorius is defending himself against allegations he murdered his model girlfriend by shooting her several times in his upscale house on Valentine's Day morning.
Reeva Steenkamp died from gunshot wounds suffered inside Pistorius' home in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday.
Pistorius was arrested and charged with her murder the same day. His family denies he murdered her.
Claims emerged yesterday that police found a bloodied cricket bat at Pistorius's luxury home in a gated housing estate on the outskirts of Pretoria.
Some press reports have claimed Steenkamp, 30, may have had her skull crushed on the night she was shot dead.
On Friday the athlete broke down and wept in the court, with his face in his hands.
His family later denied he murdered Steenkamp and said the state's own evidence "strongly refutes" any possibility of a murder.
According to reports, officers who searched the home of the Olympic athlete after Reeva Steenkamp was killed are reported to have found steroids

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA— Oscar Pistorius says he shot his girlfriend to death by mistake, thinking she was a robber.
The double amputee said in an affidavit read by his lawyer at his bail hearing Tuesday that he felt vulnerable because he did not have on his prosthetic legs when he pumped bullets into the locked bathroom door.
Then he realized that model Reeva Steenkamp was not in his bed. He says “It filled me with horror and fear ...”
He put on his legs, tried to kick down the door, then bashed it in with a cricket bat to find Steenkamp, 29, shot inside.
He said he ran downstairs with her, but “She died in my arms.”
Pistorius’ account differs from the account given earlier at Tuesday’s bail hearing by the prosecution.
The Olympian fired into the door of a small bathroom where his girlfriend was cowering after a shouting match on Valentine’s Day, hitting her three times, a South African prosecutor said Tuesday as he charged the sports icon with premeditated murder.
The magistrate ruled that Pistorius faces the harshest bail requirements available in South African law. He did not elaborate before a break was called in the session.
Pistorius sobbed softly as his lawyer insisted that Reeva Steenkamp’s shooting was an accident.
“She couldn’t go anywhere. You can run nowhere,” prosecutor Gerrie Nel said at a bail hearing.
The shooting death has shocked South Africans and many around the world who idolized Pistorius for overcoming adversity to become a sports champion, competing in the London Olympics last year in track besides being a Paralympian. Steenkamp, 29, was a model and law graduate who made her debut on a South African reality TV program that was broadcast on Saturday, two days after her death.
Nel said the couple had had a shouting match and Steenkamp fled to the bathroom, down a seven-metre passage from the bedroom, and locked herself in. He said the 26-year-old Pistorius got up from bed and had to put on his prosthetic legs to reach the toilet door.
Nel told the court the door was broken open after the shots were fired. Pistorius’ lawyer insisted there was no evidence to substantiate a murder charge.
“Was it to kill her, or was it to get her out?” defence attorney Barry Roux asked the court, referring to the broken-down door. “We submit it is not even murder. There is no concession this is a murder.”
Pistorius, who had appeared grim and solemn at the start of the hearing, broke down and sobbed softly with his head in his hands as his lawyer argued that it was an accidental shooting. It occurred in the early hours of Feb. 14. Neighbours had heard a loud argument and then gunshots, police have said. The couple had been dating for only about three months.
As details emerged at the dramatic court hearing in the capital, Steenkamp’s body was being cremated Tuesday at a memorial service in the south-coast port city of Port Elizabeth. The family said members had arrived from around the world. Six pallbearers carried her coffin, draped with a white cloth and covered in white flowers, into the church for the private service.
June Steenkamp, the mother, said the family wants answers.
“Why? Why my little girl? Why did this happen? Why did he do this?” she said in an interview published Monday in The Times newspaper.
Outside the court, several dozen singing women protested against domestic violence and waved placards urging Pistorius be refused bail. “Pistorius must rot in jail,” one placard said.
South Africa has some of the world’s worst rates of violence against females and the highest rate in the world of women killed by an intimate partner, according to a study by the Medical Research Council. Another council study estimates a child or woman is raped every four minutes. While homicide rates have dropped, the number of women killed by current or former partners has increased, said the council’s Professor Rachel Jewkes. At least three women are killed by a partner every day in the country of 50 million, she said.
Steenkamp campaigned actively against domestic violence and had tweeted on Twitter that she planned to join a “Black Friday” protest by wearing black in honour of a 17-year-old girl who was gang-raped and mutilated two weeks ago.
What “she stood for, and the abuse against women, unfortunately it’s gone right around and I think the Lord knows that statement is more powerful now,” her uncle and the family spokesman Mike Steenkamp said after her memorial.
He said the family had planned a big get-together at Christmas but that had not been possible. “But we are here today as a family and the only one who’s missing is Reeva,” he said, breaking down and weeping.
At the court, Nel said the killing was premeditated because Pistorius had planned to say that he thought he was shooting an intruder, and had told that story to his sister, Aimee.
“It was all part of the preplanning. Why would a burglar lock himself inside the bathroom?” Nel asked. The shooting happened at Pistorius’ home in a guarded and gated community in a luxury suburb of Pretoria.
Roux, in arguing that Pistorius should be freed on bail, he said there were no other charges outstanding against the double-amputee who last year became the first double-amputee track athlete to run at the Olympics.
Legal experts say it could take months for the case to be tried.
Pistorius, in a grey suit and tie, nodded after the chief magistrate asked if he was well. And he nodded his appreciation when his brother, Carl, pressed his shoulder in support. Journalists jammed into the courtroom, which was full with almost 100 people, including Pistorius’ father, Henke, and sister Aimee.
In an email to The Associated Press on Monday, Pistorius’ longtime track coach — who was yet to comment — said he believes the killing was an accident.
“I pray that we can all, in time, come through this challenging situation following the accident and I am looking forward to the day I can get my boy back on the track,” Ampie Louw wrote in his statement. “I am still in shock following the heartbreaking events that occurred last week and my thoughts and prayers are with both of the families involved.”

Also wondering why the bathroom door would be locked if it was late at night with just the two of them in the house and they are boyfriend and girlfriend. The only reason that makes sense is she was trying to prevent him from entering because she felt threatened.Last edited by My Looh; 02-19-2013, 09:20 AM.

This is CNN's report:
Track star Oscar Pistorius killed his girlfriend accidentally, mistaking her for an intruder in the pitch dark of his home, he told a judge in a statement read by his attorney during his bail hearing Tuesday.
"I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder as I had no intention to kill my girlfriend," Pistorius said in the statement.
Pistorius' attorney read the statement because the runner himself was too distraught to speak. He sobbed and heaved so much during the hearing that the magistrate had to stop proceedings and ask him to compose himself. He broke down each time Reeva Steenkamp's name was mentioned.
In the statement, Pistorius said he awoke in the early hours of the morning February 14 to noises in the bathroom and said a "sense of terror overwhelmed me." He said he thought Steenkamp was in bed beside him and that he was too scared to turn on the lights. He said he shouted to her to call police, but she didn't answer.
He said he was not wearing his prosthetic legs and felt "extremely vulnerable" and needed to protect himself and Steenkamp, 29.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers agree Steenkamp died after being shot by Pistorius, 26. Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said Pistorius shot four times, striking Steenkamp with three bullets.
The Olympic athlete said in his statement that he then carried Steenkamp downstairs. She died in his arms, he said in the statement read by his lawyer.
Prosecutors reject Pistorius' claim that he mistook her for a burglar, saying it would make no sense for an intruder to hide behind a locked bathroom door.
Instead, they say Pistorius armed himself, attached his prosthetic legs and walked 7 meters (23 feet) to shoot Steenkamp through a bathroom door after a heated argument.
Defense attorney Barry Roux questioned the state's argument, asking how prosecutors would know Pistorius had put on his prosthetic legs and walked to the bathroom.
In the emotionally wrenching hearing, the judge upgraded the charge against Pistorius to premeditated murder, saying he could not rule out the possibility that the track star planned Steenkamp's death. But the judge said he will consider downgrading the charge later.
The allegation of premeditation makes it more difficult for Pistorius' attorneys to argue he should be released on bail pending trial. To win bail, the defense must argue that "exceptional circumstances" exist that would justify Pistorius' release.
Pistorius said in the statement read by his lawyer that he will not try to flee or influence any witnesses if he is allowed out on bail.
The hearing ended with prosecutors saying they needed time to study the affidavits read in court before deciding how to proceed. The hearing will resume Wednesday. Pistorius will spend the night at the police station where he's been held since his arrest.
