There is always dramatic license. Writers often begin with reality or real situations. That is their inspiration and then they heighten the drama.

Documentaries are a different story. The try to stick more closely to the real events and there is no requirement that they be dramatic or entertaining. They appeal to a very specific audience, not the general public.

This may sound harsh but I put far more value on the opinions of professionals than amateurs who know nothing about even the basics of film making. So yes, if a film garners awards from highly respected and credible sources in the industry I will put more weight on that than what some no name member of the public posting on a discussion board has to say.
