There are major issues connected with ethnicity in Malaysia...

There was in the 1950's to early 60's a virtual civil war which the British call The Malaysian incident....it was one of those conflicts that had a multifaceted cause... Clash of countries over borders Indonesia Vs Malaysia , clash of ideology Communism / Maoism vs capitalism... but it was also a clash of ethnicities as on one side the combatants were mainly ethnic chinese throw backs from the WWII resistance who refused second class citzenship... The cause of why they fought because of ethnic loyalties...Like many civil wars there are issues that society ratehr not address that remain in place.. one is the ethnic conflict.. the territorial and ideological clashes were all settled... ethnic root was not.

I suggest u thread carefully because there is a sensitivity in Malaysia about this issue... so it is a discussion that has to be broached with h care not with ur intolerant overbearing manner where truth is from a tropicana only perspective as u are apt to do with great frequency on here.. Face is still an issue...

Truth from a Tropicana perspective....give me a flippin' break. I am speaking about what I have seen and observed and comparing it to the realities I know. This does not mean that it is the only reality and overbearing...strange comment coming from you Wahalla given de way you flex pon yah at times...as I have said before ...a double standard perhaps where it is okay for men to speak out strongly but not women. When a woman speaks out strongly she is intolerant and overbearing. Based on the minimal female participation in Jamaican call in shows that deal with controversial issues I can see that some a onoo not used to women expressing opinions about anything other than flowers, fashions, cakes and gardens.

Ask any Muslim Bumiputra if there is an issue, the answer is no... Ask a member of the minorities Chinese or Hindu Indian Malaysia...My conversations with Chinese and Indian Hindus in Malaysia leads me to beleive that there is an issue.

I guess that is the difference. Mine have lead me to believe that there have been historical issues but the situation has significantly improved. By the way, my hosts are always either Chinese or Hindu Indian Malaysia.

As for woman rights there are in parallel to the ehe state secular courts a system of Islamic courts in Malaysia that has had surprising results.. occasionally they spring up in the news, and these are not reported locally..... And there are usually a liaison with that system in most companies. .. I got into trouble with it, for going into my car with a Bumiputara Assistant female who took me to a bank to do some buisness...It was made clear to me that the muslim lady must never do that again... a Again because this is an issue in Malaysia is more nuanced that the simplistic way u view race.. A more African perspective where ethnicity, religion, nationalism is a potent mix...

Note who is throwing words in this discussion....certainly not me.

but to me it is interesting that the fifth Prime Minister of Malaysia was married to a half Japanese lady who was born in Malaysia in WWII...now that is interesting...

There were riots the other day in one of the non peninsular Malaysia....something about the citizenship of some Malaysians ...

there were riots in 2007....that was associated with Hinduism..

I was specifically addressing the comment about teens "not mixing" in the article you shared. With respect to the situation between teens and I said it is peace and harmony in comparison to what I see going on in my own backyard. Please stop putting words in my mouth.

I do follow the Malaysian news...not in May though...I was extremely busy, travelling a lot. For that matter, I was not getting much sleep much less keeping up with news anywhere. I notice of late I don't even turn on the TV when I get back to the hotel which is so unlike me. No executive lounge access for me either this time so no CNN over breakfast.

This was from May 13th I believe. No I didn't see it. At that time if my own mother had walked in the room I wouldn't have seen her either. Let me take a look.

Worst ever riots strike Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, PTI:

Malaysia today was stuck by its worst ever riots, as thousands of protestors took to the streets demanding abolishing of the draconian internal security law, forcing police to fire tear gas and lobbed water cannons to disperse them.
Defying government warnings, around 15,000 protestors were on streets in response to the call by the opposition, and later a police spokesman said 175 people had been arrested amidst chaotic scenes in downtown area of the city.
It all began in small gatherings in street corners which later swelled into a huge protest march with people intending to march to the Royal Palace to register their protest.

Crowds played cat-and-mouse with the police, disappearing into side streets at the first sign of heavy deployment only to re-emerge from different sides.

The protest caused huge traffic snarls in the city with buses going off the roads and the trains halted half-way to their destinations wary of stone pelting.

The new Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak denounced the protest saying it was unnecessary as he had already announced to review the Internal Security Act (ISA), a hangover from colonial times.

The gathering is being considered the largest since the 2007 ethnic Indian protests organised by the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf). Some online sites put the number of demonstrators as high as 20,000.

People from early morning began gathering at city's main mosque, shopping malls and a railway station and started marching towards the national palace.

They chanted "Reformasi", the opposition political party's slogan for political change, and tried to submit a petition to the country's king to denounce the act.
They also called for the closures of a camp in northern Perak state where detainees are held, and an inquiry into all deaths in custody and allegations of police abuse of power.

Police backed by riot squad officers and helicopters scuffled with protestors and fired tear gas and chemical-laced water to disperse them. They also charged the protestors with batons.

"The police are really brutal," opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim told reporters at the protest. "This clearly shows (the government's) intolerance to any dissent. ... We gather here today to fight a cruel law."

Some online reports claimed that around 200 people had been arrested and 75 rounds of tear gas were fired.

Among the detained were several top political figures including R Sivarasa, vice-president of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's party. The sustained police offensive sent the huge crowd scattering, with many coughing and choking from the effects of the gas.

The roadblocks set up by the authorities to stop the demonstrators from entering downtown area resulted in massive traffic jams around the city and adjacent areas.

Restaurants and stores were closed in some places ahead of the planned rally.

Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it was impossible for the Internal Security Act to be abolished but felt it could be amended or its name changed to be more appropriate with current times.

He said the country needed laws like the ISA that could allow a person to be questioned before a matter or case could be taken to court, as well as needing other laws.

"Don't just look to our country only. See our neighbours or other countries. They too have laws more or less like ours or stricter. The act is meant to ensure economic and political stability so that there are no problems related to religion, race and culture and this is what the government stresses," national news agency Bernama quoted him as saying.

He noted that people should not be afraid of the ISA if they had not done anything wrong. "I speak from my experience in 1988. Although I was detained under the ISA, I accepted the situation. When I was questioned and investigated, I was of the opinion that the police did their job professionally," said Ahmad Zahid.

Under the law, authorities can detain any person without trial for an indefinite period, citing security threat. Under the same act, five prominent Hindu leaders of the outlawed Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) were detained after the 2007 ethnic Indian protests.

May the 13th was the anniversary of the riots in 1969..... My ex chinese Malaysian parents always acknowledged that day they lost a son..


Also there was a police assult on what they claimed was Fillipinos in Sabah as I mentioned....it turned into a full blown insurrection....partly was due to the fact the issue of citzenship....

The Malaysian government is very good at controlling the narrative,,,,

No never got any anti Japanese jokes. People know better than to pull that with me but a friend of mine who grew up in a small town near Emperah is 100% Japanese blood 3rd generation and all his life growing up he was called the "F'n Jap"....that is how people referred to him. So I know there has been anti-Japanese sentiment for a long time. Just saying so many Japanese things have taken hold now in Southeast Asia that it would not really be on my radar ... the marriage thing.

Second Penang Bridge ramp collapses, four in car found dead: GEORGE TOWN

An uncompleted flyover connecting to the still-under-construction second Penang bridge at Batu Maung collapsed at around 7pm Thursday, burying two cars and a motorcycle under the debris.
Supt Lai Fa Hin confirmed that one car, a white-coloured Perodua Kelisa was found smashed, and all four passengers were found dead.
Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that one motorcyclist, who was earlier trapped under the debris, has been pulled out. He suffered injuries to his head.


State Fire and Rescue Department have mobilised hundreds of firemen from throughout the state as well as volunteers to the scene, including medical personnel.
Firemen are extricating the debris to reach the cars and motorcycles under the rubble, consisting mostly metal scaffolding and steel beams.
Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin, who was on the scene, said about a 30m-long span of the ramp was believed to have collapsed around 7pm, as work to install concrete boulders to strengthen the structure was ongoing.
He said he was informed a few people may be trapped under the rubble.
State executive councillor Lim Hock Seng said the cause of the collapse had yet to be determined.
"We cannot confirm the cause of the accident," he said, adding that a full investigation would be carried out.


The 24km-long bridge was set for completion next month.
The longest bridge in South-East Asia and 20th in the world was supposed to go through road commissioning and testing in August before being officially opened in September.

Now I am confused. The Malaysians have the beautiful causeway that links Peninsular Malaysia with Penang Island. In fact, they are so respected for their engineering expertise in these matters that I believe the Jamaican Gov't called on them for assistance a while back.

No but I have worked with members of their executive team. The cars were originally produced strictly for local use and brought to market as an affordable starter car. I am not an expert re: anything under the hood to do with cars. You would have to consult RichD or Emperah fi dat.

I would not acknowledge any connection to it however peripheral, the embarrassment....and it was exported to the UK in the 90's. It was badly made with poor quality finishing, poor eye to detail.. And the localy sold ones were worst... They bought Lotus to improve.. And it is nothing to do with the engine.. The engine was Japanese if memory served me correctly and was very good but engines are easy compared to finishing..... the body work was like cardboard, the locks didn't work on the car, mirrors fell off, ill fitting doors this was off numerous cars I had. it looks ok as a car but smoke and mirrors ... Basically there was a major issue with quality compared to say Korean.

again this comes back to the issue the goverment controls the narrative and finding details on this sort of stuff is not easy...

and a couple times I was in Malaysia thyere was collapsed road structures....There was collaspse of the urban transport system they were putting in. in KL... there was a roumour bits were falling off the towers that might have been drunken lies....I know I helped move in a couple ex pat friends into houses and there were always issues with leaks, not quite square frames... one guy aproach was when ever the deposit ran out he changed houses other wise...

So where u got the idea of Malaysian engineering excellence is something else... But I haven't been there for years. I like the place...
