I am not understanding ...keep what a float? Her husband was paying all the bills and giving her allowances for things her and there. He was the one keeping things &quot;afloat&quot;. yep the economy had to support twice as many workers and instead of equal pay it became lower pay (supply and demand in the workforce) and in most industries the pay for men and women is still not equal

Yes following <span style="font-weight: bold">if</span> a woman has her own account line
since he was giving her an allowance then I am hoping she would save some for rainy days.. Since they were going downhill (the calls about the bills, etc) she may have taken some from her account to pay the bills

edited to add: in this case the woman did not have any accounts of her own and totally dependent on her husband a very move

An herein lies where we agree and the whole point. I don't care how much the man makes, I need to have some kind of nest egg for miself and I would rather have that nest egg by working.. Taking allowances from him and putting that away still doesn't quite do it for me. I need to have my own source of income (even if I am home).

Shoot, I've given up on finding a man that will even pull an equal share of the load!

If my husband was taking care of me and I got spending money and such, best believe I would be squirreling that away for the time he tried replacing me with a younger model. Or until I had enough to strike out on my own. Am I Bitter? Cynical? Not really (anymore ). Realistic? Most definitely.

I'm so used to running things now, I'm happier this way.

There is a high price to pay for being &quot;kept&quot; I prefer not to have to answer to anyone but the Creator. For me, that is true women's liberation!

if a woman is not working and a job is available, then a man does it, so i don't know that the women's liberation movement forced the economy to find jobs for both sexes instead of just one, or split jobs to fit in women... which is sort of where i think your statement is heading.

it is inherent in capitalism anyway to go for the lowest wages possible in order to maximize profit. if there's a modern plague of low wages, then that's a factor of globalization more than the women's movement, and also the shifting of more economies into service industries.

YUh noh belive mi seh she did have a business Seveen Yuh just said she took his money and built it.
She was featured in Business week years ago feautring her marketing firm. I will see if I can find anything on it

I've had the &quot;pleasure&quot; of knowing plenty of women that stayed home. not necessarily rich, but stayed home while the hubby went to work. I've seen some of these women who couldn't tell you what bank held the mortgage or where the utility bill got sent. I've also seen the flip side, that even though the woman didnt work...they were up on where the money came from and how things were paid.

About a year ago, a teacher began working at our school. Of course you want to get to know them and she shared that teaching (the job she now has at our school) was the 1st job she has ever had. EVER. She wasnt a young woman either. She married while in college (never got her degree), had 3 children, and her hubby went to work while she stayed home. Her hubby died few years back and when everything was sorted out. They were actually bankrupt. She had to go back and finish school and basically start, as she never did.

For me...working is a sort of mental stimulatation. I dont believe that I can get that kind of stimulation by staying home. Yeah, I am sure that I could do charity work and read books and travel, but there is something about working. I will work. I will always work. I guess I am just wired that way.

I think it is all about communication.

I think it was Goldilocks that also brought up this &quot;answer to&quot; aspect of this set up. That is the other reason why I would rather maintain my independence.

Granted independence doesn't necessarily mean you and the hubby cant communicate and share in the finances. Quite the opposite, it is just a matter of personal security – juuuuusssst incase
