The only thing I recognised in the ingredients was chamomille, but it is the same way with baby shampoo. I just happened to have it for my hair and thought it might help manage hers.?.?.? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

Amazon has a couple books on the subject that might be helpful, I have never read them but for one of the books "Wavy, Curly, Kinky : The African American Child's Hair Care Guide" one of the reviewers had this to say

In reguard to your babiy's hair, it depends on how tight the curl pattens are. You cant tell until the child is about 2-3 years old when you will see the true curl pattern. In the mean time it is perfectly ok to wash you child's hair 2-3 times a week. I have full nappy black hair and that is how often I wash my hair as well as my child.

When I was doing a short natural, it was the same way. Now that I have a perm (relaxer) it is still the same. Don't oil the scalp. That is old fashion plus it retards the growth. The pores in the scalp will clogged up and the sebacus glands won't work correctly.

The type of oil you use depends on the curl pattern. If you have real nappy hair then you can use a Lusters pink oil or any of its knock off. If it is not so nappy, use a light fruit oil. You can buy those at a Indian store. They have alin oil, and coconut licquid hair oil.

Here is a hair oil recipie you can make in your kitchen:

* 1 cup of shae butter( you can get that from an African store
* 1 stick of coca butter (you can get that at any drug store that sells to black people)
* small bottle of olive oil (you can get that at any grocery store)
Combine all ingreidents in plastic bowl and place in microwave oven for 3-4 mins or until all ingreidents are melted. When cool, place in empty bottles or containers. You should have enough for 3-4 month supply. Apply the hair oil the the hair never to the scalp preferably after washing. You only need a little.

That sure is a cute baby. RL, please don't braid it, or put vaseline, or oil or any chemicals in her hair. Washing her hair once a month is absolutely NOT hygenic. Every other day is perfectly fine. She's just a baby, give her hair time to develop and be strong. Baby shampoo, towel dry and a gentle brushing into a neat pony tail is fine.

She's adorable, all those chemicals and tight braiding will have her hairline receding to the the top of her head by the time she's a teenager. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif[/img]

She can put oil in her hair just not on the scalp. As a matter of fact no nappy headed person should oil thier scalp. That is sooooooo dated; it like still pressing and curling. Oiling the scalp ruins the oil flow of the sabacus glands. Nappy hair secreates oil but because the curl pattern is flat (look under a microscope), the oil does not reach the ends. This is why you oil the hair not the scalp.

Chinease type people have a circle curl pattern if you look under a micrscope. That is why their hair grows faster. The sabacus oil from the scalp can reach the full lenght of the hair.

There is a slight correction on the homemade oil
1 cup of shae butter
1 bottle of olive oil
1 stick of cocca butter

Its important to use the stick of cocca butter because it is chemical free and natural in comparison to other types of cocca butter. Make this oil recipie and you will be shocked how nice the hair looks. If you can't get buy all three ingreidents use what you have or go to an Indian grocery store and buy either thier coconut hair oil or thier alcian fruit oil. Also, do wash you child's hair 2-3 times a week.

My sons hair changed - but only after I starting cutting it regular (around 10 yrs old) until then he had the most lovely soft, long curls. Once he started getting into shaved head, fades etc, and we tried letting it grow again for cornrows... the hair had lost a lot of the softness, but still isn't really kinky. If he were to grow out again (ie for plaits/cornrows etc) he would still need something to secure the ends because it is too soft to hold itself together.

My friend's daughter was similar - long curls, but not as soft. We washed her hair every day as well, mild shampoo, conditioner, and spent quite a bit of time brushing and braiding etc.


RL - you should be able to do the same, mild baby shampoo and conditioner. Like Sue says, her hair looks quite 'fine' so limit using barrettes etc.

I am also the mother of a mixed girlchild, so here is my piece.

Wash everyday when she is small, but as she gets older and the hair and scalp texture changes don't wash more than twice a week, so that the scalp doesn't becomes too dry. Always condition after washing. Leave the conditioner in for at least ten minutes. Comb through before rinsing.

After years of trial, I've finally settled on this product, which although not an original black product works wonders for my nappy hair and makes my daughters curls (shoulder length when dry and to the buttocks when wet) soft and beautiful.

Towel dry and put a little hair oil in the hair immediately after washing (I am going to make and try the homemade one suggested here), but not on the scalp, and never so much that it looks or feels greasy. Do not use dryer. Brush and leave. When the hair gets longer make one big braid, or two small ones after towel drying. The hair is then much softer and manageable when completely dry.

Ps. My favourite shampoo by St. Ives is the Silk, but I've tried and like all of them. The product is Swiss made and a little expensive, but really good.
