Jahyout, Can you give me an overview of the rastafarian's usage of '<span style="font-weight: bold">Babylon</span>'? I believe it means the 'system', but can you tell m a little bit more..

i think that says it- the system...the slang stuck to police in jamaica...i guess because they are the symbol of enforcement for the system- the unjust corrupt power that subjugates innocent poor people- just like the babylon of the book of revelations- the beast; the governments of the earthly kings and overlords drunk with greed & power

But in any society, isn't there need for systems - of policing, governance, etc..? Why do some Rastas see these necessary systems as evil?

wasn't really going into that part of it...what i meant was that for some reason in jamaica the slang term for police became 'babylon'...
as in 'si two babylon a walk down the road'...

yes there is a need for 'systems', but there is no need for corrupt or unjust 'systems'

Jah Yout, what is your take on the dietary practices...

Over a game of pool once with one of my rasta bredren we began talking about this, he thought I was vegetarian and I explained that yes that is mostly true but we also eat meat. He said, "I don't eat animal flesh," which I thought pretty strange because we just had steam fish and he was first to unwrap the foil lol.

When I told him fish was just like chicken that swam in the sea he wasn't having it....so I am curious do the dietary systems speak to rastafari sects or is it just how the person develops their individual understanding of how to support life.

being a vegetarian is not the same as being a vegan which would cover not eatinf fish, dairy products etc.

hhmmm...very good question;
really don't know but one guess is that people automatically link rasta with jamaica plus the other 'small island' thing they have to hear sometimes...
also jamaica went through the initial stages of the system figting down rastafari with blatant over-the-top methods and kind of went through a period of more acceptance after that...
perhaps the other islands are further behind in that 'acceptance' stage...so they have to fight harder to have their various governments respect their rights and their culture

yea i think fish qualifies as animal flesh...
i think it's more so pork that is a no-no more than say just meat...
some ras straight vegetarian but some eat meat...i think it comes down to a personal choice;
meat eating represents babylon system where men devour men...it also feeds the bloodlust within man and leads to fleshy & savage thinking- rape, murder, brutality, etc.
bloody meditation & weakheart conception;
not to mention the ill health effects of years of meat-eating...man doesn't absolutely need meat to live-
it is the primitive, lustful & blood-thirsty instinct which thrives from the eating of flesh & blood...

there are a few things I am still not connecting the dots on:

1. From what I have read, ras tafari was born as it where from the oppression of white men against blacks. with that being said, how is it that at this point in the philosphy's history that ras tafari is open to just anyone - meaning all race, colors or creeds?

2. How do you reconcile the above with your belief system?

3. Again - another form of reconciliation that I just do not fully comprehend - rejection of Christainity as a religion but still keep the believe in the Bible and the basic message of a Saviour?
