Go with your heart but watch out for warning signs. I live in Negril and see it time and time and time again. Some men have the lines down and can even cry on command.

As someone else said, if he gives you any "hard luck" story and needs money for this or that- get rid of him. There are some people who make all of their money off a lie- and they'll tell it to 3 or 4 different people and will be making money off of 3 or 4 different people (and this isn't just men, there are women who do it too).

If he doesn't have a job- get rid of him. Jamaica is a hard place to live and it is hard to make money but in areas like negril there are too many people who hussle men and women with promises of love.

You should not be expected to pay for everything when you are together. I don't care if you have more money than him. Then you'll have to do something you both can afford.

You should not be expected to bring him expensive (or any for that matter) presents.

He should call you too. You should not be the only one doing the long distance calling.

He should not instantly talk about coming to America and living with you. I have 3 different men in my neighborhood that I've known for several years who have left to marry an American woman and then came back on vacation. I've seen 2 of them back and was talking to them--- they married because "that is what they needed to do to get to the US."

And finally please, oh please, do not fall for any of these lines: "I've Never been with a white girl" If he really hasn't, he isn't going to use this as a line. "I want to marry you." After a week or on first meeting... really? "I love you"... he may lust you but using the "I love you" thing within a week of knowing you...not going to happen.

Vacation romances are fun. Relationships are fun. But remember, when it is long distance it is easy to hide a lot. When you know each other for a week at a time it is easy to hide a lot.

I'm in a relationship now with a Jamaican but I didn't know him prior to moving here. Just like everywhere there are Jamaican men and women who are good (just like there are bad people all over the world) and will be an equal and good partner. Lord, on my first trip to JA I had one particular guy approach me from the street. He asked me when I landed and what hotel I was staying. I was being very vague in giving out any information to him, pointing away from where we were staying.

The next thing I know he was telling me I wasn't being truthful he knew exactly what day I had arrived and even told me what clothes I had worn the day before. 1. he did not give me a hard luck story and I'll keep both ears and eyes open for them

2. he does have a real job working for the hotel

3. he is the one who calls me, i only called him the first time to tell him that i got home safely. when he calls, i chose to call him back because he calls me directly and at a $1.50 a minute, i cant afford that, but I do have to ask him to get a calling card if that is even possible

4. he has not mentioned coming to america (other than us taking turns visiting each other) I am the one who was thinking about the future just saying that if this works out, i'd rather he come live in the US

5. he did not give me any of those cheesy lines

6. i intend to follow my intuition, which is why i agreed to the long distance relationship... i have a very strong sense of intuition and i listen to it well.

Not to sound pompous, but I am a very kind, generous, and sweet person but definately not gullible. I did use protection... no other way about it... and thanks for your honesty, I am not insulted or offended by anything you have said.

I have grown a lot since my last serious (3 year) relationship. I personally do not feel like i have a childish mentality but I appreciate your perspective. I will say that I am not familiar with anything Jamaican and that is why i'm here, to gain insight on what this Jamaican man may be up to if he is being shady... and right now, I do not believe he is being shady.

Calling directly it costs me $18J which is roughly $.28US so I don't know how he is being charged $1.50 to be calling straight- I would look in to that more. Even the small lies can turn into huge ones.

my cellphone company charges me $1.50US per minute, i dont know what his charges are but he doesnt have a problem calling me direct...
