Sukuna the caste system in India developed when the white looking(Aryans) Indians conquered the dark skinned Indians. This to me was not within the race. Although the caste system started out in a racial manner, it did not remain racially so. To defended the virtue of the Indian caste system by noting that it was intended that people not marry into their own blood line ignored the fact that the dark skinned Indians and white skinned Indians in the caste system have different interests. This to me was a clever method to defend the legitimacy of caste system and to rationalized the position of the lower caste by creating plausible explainations and sterotypes that make the caste system seems scientific, logical, and even religious. I hated Plato.

Where I believe we differ is on the question of racism between ethnic groups. Still, I agree with you that to compare the modern racism we experience to the caste system is problematic.

One of my favorite poem is "PASSIN Fe WHITE" by Miss Louise Bennett. It is the story of a Jamaican student in the US who was doing poorly in school. The student did not feel bad about her grade. The only thing that she was worried about is that it would be discovered that she was not white. The joke is that many blacks become radical blacks when they realized that they cannot pass fi white. Is this the reason why so many blacks from the Caribbean see themselves as different from black Americans? Many blacks in America came from the Caribbean during the enslavement of the Africans. Racism creates two roles: one is the superior position and the other is the inferior position. Therefore, the more you identify with non black culture the closer you are to being given preferential treatment. The artifical created differences is the psychological effect of racism.

Ask yourself why do so many black people from the Caribbean bleach their skinned? Look at what Micheal Jackson did to himself? Why did he start with the man in the mirror? What is the images of the ideal beauty of the black woman that is being projected? Yes, it is the light skinned black women. Why is that the darker skinned women are relegated to the lesser roles in society?

Oh if they onli knew..............so many ppl. do not realize or know this or they choose to ignore it.

Most of the slaves,were in fact,brought to the Carribean first b4 they found themselves in the US.

That is what they say.

But there are many other attributes of the Indian caste system which makes me question this, especially those similar to many African caste systems. Not only in some does it have to do with blood line but also with skills and crafts. Here it is a way of ensuring that certain skills are passed on through the bloodline physically.

This could not have been cropped up by the whites and has nothing to do with skin colour. Mind you I am on the original intention of the system. Indeed it leaves room for racist interpretations on its introduction to* the whites. The caste system where a goldsmith can only marry a storyteller is not a light skin - dark skin thing. Unless race defines our capabilities and the storyteller happens to be the darkest lot [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

This conquest is rightfully categorized as racism because of their difference. After all they won. This happens after war. Winner -looser, inferior - superior! You cant call the whole caste system racist because of this. The lower caste was the looser, plain and simple. If a dem compexion mek dem loose. Well! i dont know of any such place , but i'm sure you'll find plenty of 'isms in said location, anyway.
throughout the world there are social systems in which ones position is based solely on ancestry . we often talk about the consequences of slavery , ignorant of the fact that in african societies there are tens of millions of people who live with the "son's of slaves " label attached .their inferior status remains unquestioned .

RUFFDYMON although I disagree with a lot of what the kid said, the kid is entitled to his opinion. Why are these kids going to drive us all to hell if he disagree with us. I thought the kid contributed a lot to the topic. The kid did not know that only Europeans were white and everybody else was black(including his people) but hopefully we encouraged him to further research the topic. I hope JAINDIAN was encouraged to developed a better understanding of people he did not understand. I find it amusing that you said the kid need therapy and not the people who are racist.

I do not have the anwser to your question but your question imply that racism is inevitable. Is racism inevitable or was it created to justify the expliotation of a group identified by race? The term race, although not fully defined, was used to explain why certain people should be free and other should be enslaved when the Europeans wanted to expropiate property. Before the establishment of slavery, people of different race intermingled and some even married. Yes light skinned Europeans and dark skinned Africans married before slavery. The modern version of racism came about because the economic system needed a method to justify the expliotation of a group of people. It was only after slavery was instituted by the Europeans that color prejudice became an issue and the modern version of racism became the problem. So that is why I believe the modern version of racism was instituded and not inevitable.

I told Sukana that I did not like Plato. Plato said the most effective way to maintain power is to convince people that the situation in racist society is natural and inevitable. The idea is to convince people that racism is natural and inevitable. This distract attention away from the problems of why dark skinned people of African decent are at the bottom of a racist economic system. This is a clever way of getting many darkskinned people to defend racism by knowingly and unknowingly accepting psychological conditioning.

H.O. why was Marcus Garvey accepted in the U.S. when he started to talk about racism by black American but many black Jamaicans did not accept him. Why is it that so many black Jamaicans avoid the issue of race.

Samuel you make a valid point that ethnic differences in many Africans countries create ethnic conflict. I agree that that prejudice similar to racial prejudice creates conflicts because of the superior and inferior position of the society. Yes, slavery is still a problem in some part of Africa but ethnic conflict creates justification for racism. The weakness in that position is that it fail to address how the heirarcy was created. Look at the Hutu and the Tusti(sorry the spelling is incorrect) in Africa and you would say that this is ethnic conflict based on superior and inferior position if you did not realized that these group use to live peacefully before colonialism. When Marcus Garvey returned back to Jamaica in 1914 and established the UNIA, he promoted black solidarity and a concern for African blacks. But the UNIA met apathy from blacks and particularily the "lighter skinned Middle class who did not want to be identified as blacks for social reasons. I think alot of black jamaicans didnt see any purpose in his struggle for Africa so to speak...

then, in 1917, he opened a UNIA office in New York
in 1920 his popularity as a leader started to decline. then in 1925 he was imprisoned. many people started to think of Garvey as a "bombastic demogogue", or a naive dreamer. "Garveyites" were denied to settle in Liberia.

There was once plenty racism in Jamaica especially at Vernamfield where it was Mini Coopers and Ford Escorts doing the burning.
Nowadays racism is more rampant at Dover where the Japs have established their superiority with Mazdas, Nissans etc.
