Bible Study

I have a few questions that arrive from reading the scriptures. I'm not sure about anyone else but I love a good bible study any day. This thread is meant for us to do just that. Any questions regarding any particular scripture we can put it here. I use mainly the King James Version and I know that many use various versions of the Bible, which should add gracefully to this topic. When posting please put the version of the Bible that you are using.

My first question is this:
KJV Matthew 28 : 18-20 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

I am a bit confused by this command. Is it a command for every believer? If so are we all authorized to baptize others? If it's not a command to all believers who is it a command to?

DB, I actually did a bit of reading on these three verses this morning. As a believer, it's your duty to spread the gospel. As for baptizing, I would leave that to those that are called to be ministers.

Compry, I hear what you're saying. Actually this is the scripture that supports what you're saying. KJV Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. but I'm trying to get an understanding of that particular command given in Mathew 28.. who was it given to and who is meant to receive it?

The initial commission/commandment Jesus gave in Matt. 28:18 was primarily directed to the disciples at that moment in time. The responsibility of those initial apostles were to make other disciples who were to continue the process of creating other disciples who will continue to spread the gospel.

Among disciples of Jesus Christ are ministers, teachers, preachers, apostles, evangelists etc., those people will teach the word and cause sort of a domino effect in creating other minsters, teachers, preachers etc. and the cycle continues. We are a part of that cycle Daily bread, the gospel transcended from the time of Jesus to our time/generation & nation through 1. The written word of God and 2.) Disciples who were obedient in spreading the gospel [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] It is in this cycle of creating disciples that God is with us, it is within this cycle that the gospel continues to spread throught the world. As Beloved's signature says, "Each one, teach one" In so doing, God will remain with us through the end of time.

I am a bit amiss as to who made the rule that only "ministers, teachers, preachers, apostles, evangelists etc" are allowed to baptize those that require baptizim. Please note that I'm not against it and I do not think may make sense for order. This command to me was given to the diciples and is meant for all that will believe and follow Jesus. In the same way the Holy Ghost is meant for all to receive.

I don't think only those people are allowed, as a rule, to conduct water baptism; at least the bible didn't designate any specific office to be responsible for baptism. I think such designation comes from doctrine, and doctrine varies from church to church. So if you want to participate in baptising people, find a chuch where they'll let you get in the water and help out. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] Just kidding.

In the Bible, John the Baptist was not only an evagelist he was forever in rivers Baptising people. I don't know how that came about but he was the most famous water baptims designee in his time. Baptism can be full immersion or sprinkling; it depends on the choice / doctrine of the church and whomever they designate to do it.

Growing up, my father and another minister did most of the water baptism, occasionally the pastor of the church would do the same. I don't think it matters who does it in the church as a body, I think having a designated person(s) to do baptism is more of an issue of decency and order within the church.

It is believed and often preached, that Moses went to hell (or possibly went to hell) because he disobeyed God by striking the rock, rather than speaking to it as God had commanded.

I've heard it said that even though God used Moses to do great miracles in leading the children of Israel out of Egypt, his one act of disobedience and consequent punishment of never seeing the promised land, is an example for us today that our works and disobedience for a time is not good enough to get us into heaven. We have to continue to be obedient to God's word and commandments. Agreed. This is what I've been hearing so far on the fate of Moses' soul.

I use to believe Moses never made it to heaven; that was what I was taught right? Well that belief has changed due to a passage of scripture I read during my quiet time this morning.

Question: On the fate of Moses' soul, what are your thoughts & beliefs?

<chuckling> I think your answers lies in Hebrews 11:39, 40: " And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect." The "these" includes Moses.

I personally have never heard that.

In addition to waht CEW posted I would like to add this scripture: KJV Matthew 17:3 - And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

These scriputres clearly shows that Moses did not go to hell. I believe there is also another scriputre that reference Moses and Elijah coming back to walk in Jerusalem in the last days. If anyone knows it they can add it for clarification.
