According to 2 Kings 2:9, Elisha requested a double portion of Elijah's spirit. Elijah - under the inspiration of God - replied that Elisha's request would be granted provided that the younger prophet were with him at the time he was taken away. The scriptures then record that this condition was fulfilled. How was the double-portion manifested in Elisha's life? I was quite suprised when I stumbled upon this and just want to see if anyone have any ideas.

He was diligent and kept his promise to Elijah by staying with him until he was caught up hence he received the promised that Elijah made to him.

He was able to part the river Jordon to cross through and curse the kids who taunted him in Bethel.

The double portion came upon him when he rent his clothes in two and took up the mantel. Because Elisha had followed Elijah all this time his Spirit and Elijah's spirit became one. He knew how to by the power of God do the things that Elijah did. However, because he now had Elijah's mantel he had another portion. Had he not been there when the mantel fell he would not be able to pick it up. I hope this makes sense.

Elisha performed twice as many miracles as Elijah.

Also, upon contact with Elisha's remain, a dead soldier was thrown into Elisha's tomb and that soldier was resurrected.

That's all I can think of for now.

How do you figure that? He asked for a double-portion and it was told him that if he saw Elijah when he went up, it would be granted. He did, end of story. The double-portion was not in the mantle.

I agree but (not a disagreeing but) he was still able to perform miracles not using the mantle/cloak.

I could be wrong and stand corrected if I am. However, the first thing that Elisha did was to part the river Jordan. In this he received the confidence that he was able to do that which Elijah did and more. Sometimes all we need is one small victory to realize the greatness that is within us. That's just my opinion though. Very thought provoking and I enjoyed this one [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Queen, Dailybread, CEW, et. al., I may be out to left field on this one but come with me for minute and if I'm wrong, please do let me know.

The story of Elijah and Elisha reminds me of Jesus Christ and His disciples/us. When He was leaving, He told us that He would send a comforter, The Holy Spirit. If we believe in Him and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can perform miracles. The extent of the miracles will only be limited by our levels of faith.

Elisha believed that he could do the same things and more that Elijah did and after receiving the symbol (cloak) he set out in faith and did twice the amount of the miracles. Our symbol is the Holy Spirit, it's just for us to believe.

Like I said earlier, correct me if I'm wrong.

My reservation with this is the following sentence: "If we believe in Him and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can perform miracles." Are you implying that if someone does not have the gift of the Holy Spirit, God cannot do miracles through them?
