You shouldn't have any debt and much as you are able you should strive to save to purchase things cash. Of course this is difficult when it is a house but with properly applied money management skills it is possible to pay it off long before the period of amortization.

So in other words Jedi, are you saying it's okay to have debt as long as it it as house or the like [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] I took the scripture to mean that we should owe no many anything and that includes having a mortgage. I may have taken the verse out of context but I'm not sure. Maybe we should all live in apartments until we can afford to purchase a home cash

Maybe...but saving for a mortgage is next to impossible but that depends on where you live. On the other hand renting is still owing isn't it? I believe that we are told this to strive to have our own without borrowing, but elsewhere the scriptures does admonish us to payback our debts. So I believe the best estate is to be free of debt, but short of that handling money wisely so as to become debt free asap is the Godly way.

Can you find the scripture that tells us to pay back our debts please? I'm aware of the following scriptures that show us that we should not borrow and when we lend we should not expect it back.

Luke 6:34 - And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

Luke 6:35 - But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Matthew 5:42 - Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

There is also one that says the wicked borrows and pay not again. Let's see... here it is:

Psalms 37:21 - The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.


All of the above scriptures show that we should not be borrowers but instead lenders. I agree with you that we need to try and live debt free. I'm just trying to understand how.

I think these should answer your question about the Bible discouraging borrowing.

Psalms 37:21 - The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

and

Proverbs 22:7 - The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.

Deuteronomy 15:6 - For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee.

Deuteronomy 28:12 - The LORD shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow.

On the topic of living debt free, it is possible. In most cases however, it is not most people cannot afford to buy a house or a brand new car cash down. However, we as Christians are called to be good stewards over the little we have here on earth.

Being good stewards means, not living above one's means, i.e. handling money wisely which would rule out impulsive spending habits...(a past weakness of mine) I love to listen to Larry Burkette, he has a lot of wisdom and tools on handling money with a biblical perspective. I use his debt calculator and budget software programs and now I can almost see the light [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I totally agree. Of course it also means tithing on our increase, giving, and saving. I am constantly amazed at how many people are negligent on the latter. It really doesn't matter how small, saving is one of the evidence of being financially responsible.

From one of the Bible Commentators I have come to respect:

"Christians must avoid useless expense, and be careful not to contract any debts they have not the power to discharge. I love Larry burkette as well. He comes on our radio station daily at 4:30pm 'money matters'.

The one thing that surprises me that we neglect to honor our Christian responisbilities and be good stewards indeed of God's money. I was shocked at the # of Christians that are in 'unncessary'debt (myself included until of late). We must on a whole learn that if we do not apply wisdom even after tithing and go about calling ourselves Christians we are doing harm to ourselves unknowningly.

I think budgeting is a great tool to identify unnecessary spending, and finding that $10 here, $20 there to save instead of spending it unnecessarily. Something as simple as using ATM machines that charges a fee can be avoided if one sees how it piles up monthly.

CEW, I fully agree. I must admit that I had to get an accountant to get my finances in order. Yes, I could have done it myself and saved that extra cash but getting one has helped me to put my spending into perspective. I could not believe how much money I was wasting and at the same time complaining that I have not enough. Budgets work wonders. We have to apply the fruit of the spirit 'self-control'.

There is one word that stood out in that entire thing that makes me wonder. Is this saying that it is wrong to debate? I'm not being frivolous truly trying to get an understanding.
