Sandi please look at your map of Jamaica. Trelawny is east of Montego Bay.
St. Bess is south.

Southern Clarendon is called Vere. And being a plain .. on some maps of Jamaica you will find the area marked as "The Vere Plain"

it's not that far South .. but rather farther from where the mountains end and where the sugar cane plantations and the plains begins

I observed that the boundaries of Vere changed for the maps dated after 1814. The area marked as Vere on the pre-1814 maps extends further north than the 1814-1865 border.

Yes Ramble on, literally Osbourne Store is in the NW of the Vere Plains. And May Pen would be north central.

The name Vere however doesn`t suggest the plains of Vere. To me and many, Vere means down by Monymusk and Hayes, south Clarendon, which is not accurate on our part but engrained.

Lady Nugent Passed through the Parish of Vere on April 23, 1802:

Up at 6, and set off, as soon as we had taken our breakfasts, for Woods, the estate of Mr. Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly. Stop a few moments at Parnassus. The road unusually good.

Before we reached our destination, General N. and I had a most extraordinary vision. He was driving me in the curricle, and we were some distance before our party, who drove slower that we might avoid the dust.

We came to the top of a hill, and just as we were about to descend, General N. drew up with astonishment at the prospect before us, and we both thought we must have mistaken our road most strangely. We knew that our journey was inland, and that, on the road to Woods, it was quite impossible we should see the harbour of Port Royal, or any place on the coast; and yet before us appeared an expanse of water, a headland with ships lying at anchor, some with their sails half exposed to the sun, as if to dry, and others with their sails close furled; in short, it was a perfect view of a harbour with its accompaniments.

Soon, however, it began to change, and as we moved gently forward, descending the hill, nothing but a plain with sugar estates was before us, and no water or ships to be seen. I have read of these things, but never before saw the effects of vapour.

We found a large party and second breakfast at Mr. Osborne's, about 2 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Ashley, Mrs. Rossington, and Miss Faro, were the only new people, but Mrs. Rossington I had seen before, and I must, at the conclusion of this day, tell an adventure in consequence of her advice.

- After dinner, we had a dance, in which I joined, though I was so unwell with a cold, that I had much rather have gone to bed. Mrs. R. said she had a receipt [recipe] that would certainly cure me, and my maid was sent for it, as soon as I was in bed. It tasted very sweet and nice, and I never slept better in my life.

When I awoke in the morning, however, I felt a little giddy, and when I thanked Mrs. Rossington for her medicine I told her so. She asked how much water I had put to it? I said none at all. She exclaimed, "Why, it was only the ingredients of a very strong punch, and you should have put at least half a pint of hot water to it!" So I was certainly very tipsy, but I slept so sound that I knew nothing of it.

I think I myself have experienced the Vere vapours, where the air was shimmering in front of me...
