Okay not to bust your bubble but I have a problem with the author's usage of the KJV to express this point. So I looked at the NIV which is an internationally accepted complete translation of the original writings and here is what it says.

"1 Corinthians 7
27Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look for a wife. 28But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.
29What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none;"

Who has not sinned by getting married? Both the virgin and the person who was loosed from a wife have not sinned. The virgin is the one who has never married; the one loosed from the wife is one who was married but got a divorcedThe word "loosed" is the word for "divorced". Paul clearly says that none of them have sinned by getting married. This makes it abundantly clear that Paul never saw remarriage as a sin.

The use of the word loosed in the KJV judging from the translation in the NIV means free or free of marital obligation not necessarily untied from, or divorced from a previous marriage. Furthermore Paul was addressing the men in his audience, are we to assume that all of them were formerly married or divorced men? Think. Again a case of an author seeking to bolster his argument using a slight twist of tranlation, which might appeal to someone who wants to believe that what he is saying is true.

I sense that debate did damage to our relationship here and I half decided not to post on this topic, should have obeyed my better angels, but since you have put it out there, best we address this.

Our disagreement was not divorce and remarriage per se it was a sidebar that grew out of your assertion that there was a difference in Holy Christian marriage and other marriages and God only recognised Holy Christian marriages as binding.

Let me state my position here without apologies, no one have to adhere of agree, this is a debate we all come to the forum with our POV there's merit and demerit in all POV the only constant is does scripture supports it.

Lets start where the bible starts

Deuteronomy 24:1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
Deu 24:2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.

The Bible states that divorce is permissable and that the divorced woman can remarry.

The issue then as now was on what grounds could a divorce be permitted. The Law rested on the interpretation of uncleaness.

Ezekiel 16:37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness.

Whereas nakedness can be intrepreted as incest and is many times in the books of the Law, the more expansive use of indecency used by the prophets was sexual and religious adultery. That is giving yourself to multiple spouses or giving yourself to multiple doctrines (gods).

So the law allowed for Divorce and remarriage and in Mathew we have a discourse of a team of Rabbi's seeking to trap Jesus into disagreeing with the Law.

Lets move on to Mathew,

In Mathew 5, we find the Sermon on the Mount, The nine Blessings. Jesus here teaches above the law in that he dealves in to intent.
Anger is murder,
lust is adultery,
cut off your failures.
He also interjects the true grounds for divorce.

Mat 5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:
Mat 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Here Jesus says that not all bills of divorcements are legit.
The cause put is only for fornication.

The Roman Catholic Church rests its case right here. Virginity proved makes a marriage dissolvable only by death and makes it a Holy Sacrement.
Could the groom prove infidelity means that an annulment could be procured twenty years later annd all children born to that union become illegimate.
The marriage was never holy and never a sacrement in God's eyes and the children born to such unions are heathens needing pennance and reconfirmation..

Jesus again deals with this issue in Mathew

Mat 19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him,
Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

In this case Jesus is plunged into a political debate.

There were two prominent schools of Rabbi's The Hillels and the Shemarians,

Hillel school argued Law from the "no fault divorce" loophole. Divorce was mandatory if the man found any grounds whatsoever. Burning the food was enough grounds, it was the "shameness of the matter".

Shamei argued that divorce was possible only in a "matter of indecency".

The word "porneia" translated as "fornication" in the passage below related to any form of sexual sin.

For Shamei, the act must be indecent for Hillei the act must only be shameful.

Jesus refused to get caught up in a political doctrinal issue he instead focussed on the intent of the union.

Mat 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Whereas these Pharisses were intent on what ways to get the partners out Jesus was intent on what ways to keep them in.
Now Jesus did not say the bond could not be put assunder.
Rather he said man should not seek to put it assunder.
It would not be relevant to intone a "not" if the marriage bond was indissoluable.
Jesus was in effect saying, "try for the higher road keep the couple together".

Mat 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

In Mathew 5 I showed that Jesus did not dissavow the divorce decree, he just qualified it.
Those based on fornication, only, were legit.

Mat 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Jesus again goes to intent, while divorce was not God's ideal it was allowed because of the hardness of man's heart, in other words divorce is an allowance for our fallen nature.

Just as men harden their hearts to God they will harden them to their spouses.
Divorce is grace to a wronged spouse.

Mat 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Twice in Mathew Jesus repeats Duet 24:1 with the acceptable cause for divorce and remarriage, "porneia".

I sincerely believe that the same hardness of heart that caused men to seek divorce, as Christ stated, is the same hardness of heart that now seeks to prevent a divorced person from remarrying.

God hates divorce as well as all other sin but He doesn't hate the divorced person or the sinner. Just as He made a way out of the curse of sin, through His son Jesus, He also made the same way out for divorce.

Jesus said that the greatest commandment is LOVE and there is no love in unforgiveness and/or forbidding someone from the very reason God made Adam a "help meet", Eve. God explicitly made male and female for companionship as well as procreation and to deny anyone this right is to declare yourself higher and wiser than God Himself.

Heb 5:12-14 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Here we read in 1 Tim 4:1-3 But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, (and commanding) to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth.

Now I am in no way implying that anyone is/has fallen away because of their stance on divorce but that it is obvious from 1Tim 4, that forbidding to marry is viewed as seduction, the doctrine of demons, hypocrisy and lies.

God declared certain animals unclean for human consumption. What this verse is saying is men are going to come with false doctrines forbidding people to eat meats. God specified what meats were unclean and why. These bearers of false doctrines will most probably be excluding all meat or others different from those God commanded indicated by “which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth”. Anyway the point is that their doctrines will be contrary to what the Gospel teaches.

JD, remember, that passage said forbidding to marry, not to remarry. Some churches will forbid you to marry a person of a different faith. Some Pastors forbid people to marry by dreams and visions that they tell. God told them that Bro. Rodney is not to marry Sis. Rachel. My ex-Pastor tried to prevent my mother from marrying her husband because he was a product of rape and she had 3 teenage daughters. What was the relevance?

divorces her, is he then free to remarry again? And then if she cheats, then can he divorce and remarry again? When does it end? How many times can you join your body with a person and become one?

Grace comes in when you catch your spouse cheating and you forgive them. Not divorce them because the law allows it and you can remarry another. Not true? People seem to use "except for fornication" as an excuse rather than a reason.

When Joseph and Mary were espoused (engaged) to be married, they were all considered to be married already. But when she came up with child, he presumed that she had committed fornication against him and sought to break off the engagement. Engagement in those times were one in the same as being married. They were already spoken for and an agreement had been made to marry. So when the law said "except for fornication", it meant the same predicament that Joseph found himself in. But nowadays, that same fornication is interpretated, by man, to mean any illicit sex act. Fornication has and always will mean, sex between 2 single people. Married people commit adultery. Homosexuals commit sodomy. People with animals commit beastiality. Sisters and brothers commit incest. These are all illicit sex acts. Mary was presumed to have commited fornication, freeing Joseph from the covenant/agreement/commitment to marry her. The engagment would have been broken, the pending marriage called off.

The Bible is clear, to me, that any person who divorces their spouse and remarries another, has committed adultery and are hence, living in an adulterous relationship. In order to be forgiven for adultery, one must come out of it. You cannot ask for forgiveness for committing a sin, but remain in it. Sometimes, we do things in life that causes us to lose things that cannot be replaced. We can blame no one but ourselves. God will always be just and fair. It is we who puts ourselves in these predicaments because of our sins and errors. Then we will twists the scriptures to find a way out or a loop hole. Not so.

Yes but what yu do when yu remarry? Yu marry, so yu can’t differentiate the two for the convenience of making a point.

While that scenario would be a very rare occurrence, the same rule of forgiveness still stands, as when Peter answered that the Law said you should forgive your brother seven times, Jesus told him seventy times seven, showing that from His standpoint forgiveness is unlimited (as long as one repents). As far as the becoming one principle of marriage goes, that is becoming one “flesh” so you are not bound to anyone spiritually except Christ Himself. That is why Jesus said in heaven there will be no giving in marriage when asked whose wife the woman that married seven brothers would be.

Marrying in the Lord basically means marrying in accordance to the statues laid out by God and these apply to first, second, third or umpteen marriage, believe it or not.

Grace comes from God’s forgiveness only, not from you forgiving an unfaithful spouse. Whether or not one forgives or divorces an unfaithful spouse, if that unfaithful one repents his/her sin to God, that sin is forgiven regardless of how the marriage turns out.

And herein lies the big controversial predicament. While I am in total agreement with you on how forgiveness and repentance works I must disagree on the belief that once you commit adultery, you are forever guilty of it unless you reconcile with your spouse. That is what you are saying but that cannot be true if the adulterer repents. Many people confuse confession with repentance and while they usually go hand in hand, they are two separate acts of contrition. Repenting of adultery means not to continue doing it. When one gets divorce, the marriage is no longer existent or binding. As much as God hates it, divorce is real and terminates the marriage. If you remarry after repenting for the cause of your marriage’s failure, you cannot be guilty of it anymore. You are cleansed by the Blood of Jesus and if you should choose to marry again, you are not committing adultery because you are no longer married. Marriage is not permanent; it is just for here on earth and now.

Cunning but not wise. When you repent, you take full blame for your sin, which is what you go to God admitting, that YOU were wrong. God can replace anything we lose, even with something better, even a better spouse! We are released from the curse of our sins when we repent and God forgives. God does not hold back His mercies and forgiveness because we “put ourselves in these predicaments because of our sins and errors”, He is not spiteful and doesn’t punish after repentance. It is man’s inner guilt and fears that hold him in bondage to things that God have already forgiven.

No one has to twist scripture to show and prove that when God forgive a sin, any and every sin, He forgets it and it is as far as the east is from the west. That is biblical. Where there is no guilt there can be no condemnation so no God forgiven adulterer or divorced person should be condemned by any pastor or church to a life of solitude and loneliness to prove that divorce is wrong.

JD, this is where we will agree to disagree. But I will correct you on this. No, I did not say the only way for guilt to be removed or forgiven for adultery is to reconcile with the spouse. They simply have to ask for forgiveness and it's done. I believe in the power of forgiveness. I would forgive a husband that cheated on me, reconciling with him is another matter. But then, I would also have to understand that I have a choice to reconcile with him or divorce him and remain unmarried. I am very forgiving, but I have a problem with forgetting.

The virgin is the one who has never married; the one loosed from the wife is one who was married but got a divorcedThe word "loosed" is the word for "divorced". Paul clearly says that none of them have sinned by getting married. This makes it abundantly clear that Paul never saw remarriage as a sin.

The use of the word loosed in the KJV judging from the translation in the NIV means free or free of marital obligation not necessarily untied from, or divorced from a previous marriage. Furthermore Paul was addressing the men in his audience, are we to assume that all of them were formerly married or divorced men? Think. Again a case of an author seeking to bolster his argument using a slight twist of tranlation, which might appeal to someone who wants to believe that what he is saying is true. [/qb]

1Co 7:28 But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.

This conversation is to the married, the never married and the divorced married.
Note to the divorced married and the never married the virgin they marry is female. Paul was saying she had not committed sin by marrying either.
The disciple was expecting the return of christ seeing the destruction of the temple at Jerusalem and the persecution of christians for their faith, the early church was rapture ready.

Marriage was being put aside in preference to chasity as the impending persecutions were tearing apart families.

The New Testament was written in Greek, we can so easily detect spin by going back to the original greek.
