afer, is juss di odder day mi was telling somebadi about the almond tree we used to have back home...dem nuh memba wah di fruit look like..mi remind dem seh it did green on di outside and red inside..the seed dem seh was pizinous [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] we neva used to eat it..which was a pity.

mi memba eating plenty juneplums and when we tired fi eat it wid salt we used to mek stew juneplums..lawx it did nice and sweet.

Mi memba dat we used to have a limetree in di back ah di yard and it used to flourish..now mi go ah grocery store and buy 4 limes for a $1..mi bex [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Wat mi miss most of all especially pon Saturday evelings is di rastaman selling swimps (shrimps) pon him bicyle. Him used to come up to town from St. Elizabeth and hang out at Constant Spring Mall in front of the jewlery store and sometimes him move down to Premier Plaza in front ah Silk and Satin store...man oh man, him used to bring up 5 special bags fi me and have dem waiting juss for me cause mi was a regular! Afer, mi is a Kingstonian and I've heard of the Mountain Cabbage but had no idea it could be eaten.

Never heard of barnabis soup being called Badoo but my mother used to make barnabis soup. I have partaken in the nyamings of roast jackfruit seed. Never eaten it boiled though.

As for almond seed, only the ones which rat bat nuh bite up bite up don't go into our mouths! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Anybody know bout busso (bussu) a river crustacean? My father who's from Portland used to bring home bushels of busso, which my mother cooked into a delicious soup.

Wey bout Jimbilin? Ever eat that? Mi used to get colic from eating too much Jimbilin. To eat jimbilin is a test of how well yu can stand sour fruits!

How can we forget 'Tinkin' Toe'?!!!

Btw, the other day I was trying to remember this tree in Jamaica which produces a small husk/shell shape pod. The pod once as it gets dry opens up to reveal hundreds of prickly prickly jukku mackas, which stick on to your fingers, spread all over your hand, on your clothes, itch like crazy!!! Anybody know what I'm talking about??

Just wanted to say how thoroughly I am enjoying this thread. Alas, I didn't have the privilege of growing up back home so I can only lurk. I got a glimpse of that Jamaica when I returned home on a visit as a child and later, when I worked there as an adult, just after things had started changing ***sigh**. Just tonight when I told one of my older cousins about the Freaky Friday biznizz she was horrified. She said "What happened to my beautiful Jamaica that I knew and loved so much?" Thank all who have posted so far for keeping that Jamaica alive.

I'm a Kingstonian and use to eat roasted jackfruit seed and stewed juneplums (thanks for the memories AG). But for the life of me I can't remember what jimbilins are! I'll look out for them on my next trip...or does anyone have a picture?

I hated tinking toe but wouldda eat almond like it's going out of style...My father used to work at Jamaica Packaging Industry and they had a big almond tree right at the entrance. The employees use to bring their children from time to time and boy did we have a field day. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Now when I visited my aunt in the country ( I was a real town to country cause everyting did excite mi) My aunt used to make banana tea...it was gooood!!! made from young green bananas but you could never tell and I have no idea how to make it. My favorite was when she threw down on some Roast breadfruit with ackee and saltfish and lemonade /limeade (from outta yaad) on a rainy day.

In St. Elizabeth, my other relatives use to concoct some tea made from a whole bunch of different tree barks and use all sorts of spices to make it just right....all I know is that the tea was red in colour and DELICIOUS!!! but doan ask me what was in it.

Then when in St. Thomas for my trips I use to pig out on mangoes of all types, blackie, stringy, Julie, number 11, paper skin, East Indian you name, they had it in St. Thomas.

Live in JA was nice...I wouldn't have traded my growing up years for anyplace else in the world.

Oh and another thing, at home in Kingston, we used to get together and run boats,,,,run dung did ah lick dem time deh....oh the memories.

Nothing beat the boat we use to have in the hills of St. Elizabeth though. We would bring pots and pans and meat and build our own wooden stove...nothing beats that flavor, then the guys would go dig up yams and pick bananas and man when we got finish, wi belly wouldda feel like it would bust any minute. We would then top it off with a nice nap under a shady tree or play some ball sport. For me, going to country on holidays was a trip to look forward to.

Afer, I know bout some a dem tings man! even doa I nevva gro up a cuntry. But knowing bout dem and eating dem is annoda matta. Mi kno bout de badoo, almond seed, jackfruit seed(roasted) but yu hav mi puzzled as to de rest. I notice yu no mentian nuttn bout tinkin toe or coolie plum. I remember jimbilin SandiF. mi believe seh all ah we did eat/drink di tings dem afer mentioned but juss dat we neva know di name of dem.

we used to eat di mangoseed so clean dat after we'd make purse outta di seed after it's dried by the sun..DWL!

Wat dem selling now as aloa vera we used to call Tuna and used to wash out hair wid it..Tuna is from the cactus family and also we used to used Red Stripe Beer as conditioner..wat a waste of good brew [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

No Sunday dinner was complete without some heavy duty soursop or carrot juice..nowadays ppl just pour drinks from bottle and serve wid Sunday dinner..my father musbe a turn inna him grave when him see dat [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

We had a cotton tree in our backyard and dem used to say if mi sit under it mi will see duppy. Mi was so afraid of that cotton tree dat mi had mi father eventually chap it down..wat a fool-fool pickney mi was and bless mi father for putting a little girl's heart at rest [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] ..my hero! First let us clear up some misconceptions.

Barnabis or banabis is a wild bean that it is like broad beans. It has a stinking ordor like Rangoon rice. The skin or integument that covers the cottilidons is course and trashy. When it is dried and soaked in water, the scent is gone after the water have been drained off many times and the course skin is taken off. The process is time consuming but when all that is done, WHAT A NICE SOUP. MAN O MAN, IT IS BELLY BUSTING!

Badoo or badu is a rhizome like the dashine, the coco, the whaja, pain coco, or the little ingine cale. All these belong to the same family. The badoo is known in some part of Jamaica as Eddo.

There is a big difference between the Almond and the Broadleaf tree. They are both of the same genus. The almond bears a fruit. The skin covers fleshy texture which covers a woody encasement of the nut. The outer fleshy part like most fruits is edible. The Almond is not a lumber tree. The Broadleaf is wild the Almond is a cultivated tree.

Conversely, the broadleaf tree is a lumber tree but is similiar to the Almond. However, it grows taller, the fruit is only smaller an there is no fleshy part to eat. The skin is attach to the wooden encasement of the embryo.

Nature have a great way of preserving the next generation. When these fruits are dried an appears petrified they can be in this state for many years.

As boys we go into the woods and collect these dried wooden fruits. Standing them upright with a stone we hit the top and they burst open and we collect the pealike nut. It is the same almond you buy in the store today, only they tasted a lot better then, it was more gummy.

As kids, dere was a lot of thing to do in dem dere woods. We go bust wood seed. Boredom was foreign to us kids in dem days.

I was very big on the almonds as a small bwoy living in Greenwich Farm. The landlord son and myself used to climb that tree and just EAT. The seed when cracked yeilded a coconut type nut. My days down the "farm" were great for running down to the sea with friends splashing around in it pretending we were swimming.

Those were de days I was afraid of duppies. My dad would send me to the back yard to fetch something at night, knowing I was terrified of the dark. Majestic was my first non-school "moving pictures" experience. Carib was my first with other excited wide eyed classmates. I think it was one of the "Lassie" movies, followed by other titles at later dates.

For me, dem de days were "little bwoy days" of boyhood memories in the Farm and Whitfield Town. They were my neck of the woods then. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

A/G, You are so right bout de tall people dem blocking our view in some a dem Kgn theatres. Dem de people nevva care bout who can see or who CAN'T see as lang as they could see. Nuh troo? Sometimes I would move my head from side to side to see what I could see an keep quiet. I was afraid fi touch some a dem, or ask dem to sit lower so I could see. As children, we were really at a disadvantage because most of de adults were taller dan us, but time took care a dat doe! In de early days only Carib and Ward had a semblance of stadium style seating.
