my mindset is that i am amazed to hear people who on one hand, coo and ooh over the earthiness of the 'real' jamaicans now state that this same said earthiness is due to their primitive take on life...their inability to stop procreating knowing that they cannot take care of the children...the same said children who provide such captivating captions when so prettily attired in their school uniforms on the way home from school in the country, the ongle 'real' place that exhibits the 'real' jamaica....so is either 'poverty and the trappings of poverty' r the 'real' jamaica or they r the bane of Jamaica and ...i am just amazed at the view of Jamaica given the time and day...nothing more nothing less...Originally posted by BND1999:

Marie K.. yes you pretty much summed it up..
i had two pennies to rub when i got married... i got pregnant.. and having that baby in my arms with so few resources made me shake in my bed at night.. worrying about bills...
id look into his face.. and think poor you.. i dont have much security......we eventually did ok.. but money was not always free flowing... bills always mounted
i made a conscientious decision not to have another... even if i got pregnant.. i was firm.. i could NOT afford two.. not the way i wanted to raise my son... i wanted to be able to afford experiences to enhance his life...
i have no regrets....Comment

Lissen mi, What BND is saying is that if i may attempt answering is that many Jamaican children are born without a family base. And given the economics where families pooling together stand a better opportunity of raising children to attain some level of quality educationally and morally by the strength of family rather than the endemic proportions of Jamaican children being born loosely and being misplaced in the very society that proclaims that they love their people.Comment

Evan, do you really beleive that's what the person was trying to say. Having a large family is great but it is HORRIBLE to not be able to afford the child a comfortable life.
It has been one year since I am married and when I went home people was amazed I wasn't pregnant. If I said the baby would be too expensive now they scoffed and said "yuh can neva too ready" I agree but if I am going to bring a child into the world shouldn't I make sure I have a structure set up so that he/she can afford the best education and have a shot at discovering his/her own path rather than take the road pre-destined by his mother's economic situations.
It is a mother's responsibility to make sure that the child is in an environment in which he can flourish and flourish doesn't mean buying him the latest Air Jordans but getting the most advanced leap frog learning accessories or exposing him to a different way of life.
But BND is right - it has become a battle of egos and this is why the country is in the position it is in.
Dare I question why on earth someone who dresses in Tommy Hilfiger from head to toe has no food in the cupboard or that money isn't used to get extra lessons is beyond me.
Dont' even mention that maybe we shouldn't be wearing the name brand and we should REFUSE to shop in foreign owned stores that sell goods we produce in JA. YOu are laughed to scorn.
When I go home i always ask who owns an establishment before I patronise it, I am laughed to scorn when I refuse to in those cases in which I have a choice.Comment
