I agree it is not the same especially economically, for while it appears that more foreign exchange is entering the country, because of the grip that SOME have on the economy, it is never enough. We are forever being beholden. When I ws there, we were under british rule, and there were many social programmes in place for children, especially in education and health care..so you are right on that score.

He also said that politics is a fight by political tribes over scarce benefits and spoils.

this is neither here nor there, for in reality there ARE scarce benefits and nuff spoils..

His cohort said that he thinks his tribe is best to lead the country and that anything to remain in power is in the best interest of the country.

Did you refer to the former PM as being one of a tribe as well?

This is what out children are being raised in.
An enviroment that even a chamelon cannot change to keep down with.

The environment does not change parents' love and compassion and caring for their children which is what was implied, and which is what I am dealing with...yes there are children in the society who NEVER knew their father, never had good relationships with their parents, but that doesn't say that they never loved them to the extent that they would leff dem fi rot..

If the majority of grassroots ppl in Jamaica TODAY only got a FAIR day's wages, for fair day's work, see how quickly this would change in the opposite direction..but this is not the case, more and more bloodsuckers are flocking to the island for afterall they have the greenlight to suck more blood in the form of high profits, due to meagre wages..

As I said before it is not what is said but who is saying it is the problem here. We really have a problem of denial when it comes to the hard core reality of what is really going on in Jamaica. Maybe if we would face the truths and act accordingly we wouldn't need any outsider to point out the obvious to us.

Geneva with all respect to your aunt may god continue to bless her goodness.
When you see 100 kids and 20 of them can`t read or write, you have to be concerned with those 20 and not so much those efficient 80.
Your aunt no doubt is exemplary.
Many teachers and administrators in the education system allow children to graduate unable to comprehend left from right, east from west.
they cannot do maths because they dont under stand what the `product of 2 and 2 means`
there is a sad absence of a united and concerted effort to re-vamp the education system so that it caters not for some but for all.
Teachers, administrators and parents cannot continue to think that if they lead their horse to the trough that it will drink.
Children will not read by just buying them a book and saying, hey babe, take this and learn to read.
The personal encouragement is not given in a classroom of 30-40 children and a home with a dozen cousins and siblings under one roof with a missing baby fawdah.

ur statements showed a stereotype if i may....poor people have limited options in a lot of ways....poor people also have the intent to do right by their kids for the most part...that circumstances prohibit this does not negate their intentions....the road to hell is indeed paved with good intentions, but with a history of our greatest coming out of abject poverty and this being the norm, not the exception, in a country like Jamaica with its history of hundreds of years of poverty in terms of dollars and cents ......we may have never had the cents but we have always had the sense...that is why the poorest still tries to believe in education being the way out for their children, even in a day when they come out of school with nothing to go on to...or even attend schools ill equipped to prepare them for the reality of the new world

where did i ever state that poor people do not have good intent.. or dont want to care for their children.......

if i sounded stereotypical.. forgive me.. im sure its possible.. we all do at times.. but its not what i feel or think inside..
