The dress went to Jamaica with us.

Finally the 27th! We didn’t go to bed, we didn’t clean up the house, we did nothing but pack and talk. Finally 3:30 arrived and we packed the car and headed out to the shuttle pick-up spot. We unload the car, and I park—way in the back in the dark. When I get back to the shuttle, the driver, ever the jokester, threatens to charge us extra because we have so much baggage. With 2 stops to pick up others, we arrive at Newark Airport in record time. The usual airport stuff, then onto the plane. I like flying direct out of Newark, but AirJa has you squashed into the smallest possible spot, sort of like being in a torture chamber. I know I’m too large, but I flew to Jamaica last month, with much less discomfort. I think I’m going to give up on AirJa and travel the extra miles to Philadelphia and fly direct on USAir. That’s how uncomfortable the flight was; I’m willing to forgo the food and convenience just to be able to move my big butt a little in the seat—it was awful!

Landing in Jamaica:

You know what it’s like. You watch, breathless as the island unfolds beneath you. Somehow I never get tired of viewing the mountains below. I pick out my favorite spots, the beaches, beautiful homes with breath-taking views of the sea and the mountains, tumble-down shacks, well maintained homes up dirt tracks into the hills. How do they get up and down those paths every day, anyway? We go through immigration and customs with little problem even though we are loaded down like pack animals—so much luggage for 2 people! Just think, this isn’t all of the stuff either. My son is bringing another suitcase when he comes in on Monday. That bag is huge and full of toys and clothing for the children at Roaring River and some other stuff for local friends.

We jump on the Juta and head to Negril. Okay here’s where the rebel in me starts to ooze out. As you will see, this seems to be the happiest of all trips, but somehow I wind up in conflict the whole time. The Juta stops at a restaurant that I have long-suspected gives the drivers a kick-back for bringing tourists there to relieve them of a little of their cash. There is only 2 others on the van with us; a young couple headed to one of the All-inclusives. We get out of the van to stretch our legs. None of us are really interested in eating; we just want to get to Negril. The young couple writes down some sights that I have recommended to them and we talk about their first impressions of the island. A cook comes out of the back, walks straight past me and greets the couple effusively. (They are white) He speaks at length to them, then walks past me again without so much as a glance. What, am I invisible? Not even a nod to acknowledge my presence?

Meanwhile Kim has gone in search of a bathroom. She asks for directions from this same cook, who completely ignores her. Normally she would just keep going, but she’s gotta go, so she follows him and asked him “what, are you going to ignore me?” Later, when she returns and tells us about what happened, and I point out what this same cook did to me, the young couple decided that they are not going to patronize this place. They feel, like I do, that tourists/visitors should be treated with equal respect. After all, isn’t my money just as green as theirs? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

The rest of the short trip goes typically; we drop off the couple and are soon at Miss Mary’s. The first thing we see is Scottie’s big grin. We settle in. Scottie gets my required vodka & Pepsi, and some Stripes for he and his cousin Denzel (more on him later), and some gin for the bride. (No more Bridezilla, thank God!) Later, we meet at Coconuts International for dinner, but we call it a night early. After all, we never did get to bed the night before, and the bride & groom need some alone time. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

Thanks for starting the story again. We are loving it. As for the rebel part, I started a seperate post if anyone wants to comment on that incident rather than mash up the love story. I invite you to comment there.

The next day is kind of a blur—we had said we wanted to go to Selina’s for breakfast, but it seemed just too much trouble to move; jet lag, I guess. Kim had said she would pick me up a pad or something to write things down, but she’s just as burned out as I am and she forgot. I had the best of intentions, since I just knew this was promising to be an extra special trip. After all the whole family is due tomorrow.

Denzel came by and took us up to the cliff house where everyone else is staying. Sis and I are the only ones who have seen this place, and everyone took our word that it would be perfect for the wedding and the place where the rest of the family could stay comfortably. The maid, Annie, is there preparing the house. She decorated all the beds with perfect swans made of towels.

Scottie and Kim agree that it is truly a perfect setting. There is a divan on the verandah facing the sea, and I settle on it watching the young couple sitting on the sea wall talking about their future—and promptly fall asleep!

The next morning we go to Selina’s for breakfast. I’ve been to Negril 11 times and somehow never made it, but I’ve been communicating with her about her preparing appetizers for the wedding.

Selina isn't there when we get there, but after a short time she arrives with her two cute kids and her mom in tow.

We agree that this was the most fun ever. Every day bloomed perfect--perfect temperature, perfect vibe between family members (No fights at all)

I’ve been to Negril 11 times and somehow never made it, but I’ve been communicating with her about her preparing appetizers for the wedding. We decide to have her make callaloo and cheese triangles, and boy, were they delicious! Kim mentioned about how she was planning on making her own cake, and she and Selina arrange to have Selina make it for her at a reasonable price. Once less thing for her to worry about.
Kim also saw Jem, the froooooot lady on the beach, and found out that her daughter makes bouquets. A deal was made, and now we arranged to pick up the flowers on the morning of the wedding. Another detail which fell into place. It was scary. Was everything going to go this well?
