Very interesting thread!!
I am wondering: besides the beach boys in Negril etc., what are Jamaican men like in general? What are their attitudes about dating, relationships, monogamy, and marriage? Also it seems there are so many unwed mothers. Is that the norm?

Probably as varied as men any where.(Good & bad every where).
I wouldn't judge the men of a country by the actions / lifestyles of a few.

this thread was not intended to suggested that ALL women were looking for bamboo, nor are ALL jamaican men living the lifestyle that is depicted here. i started it with the intention of sharing my personal experience and opinion, in hope that others can be aware of what can go on. i believe that it is worth exploring other peoples similiar experiences. like anything, you take what you need & leave the rest. that whole "grain of salt" thing definitely applies. i felt a certain amount of trepidation in starting this topic because i didnt want to step on any toes, since it is a sensitive subject. my concern for other women's welfare outweighed it though. i chose my words carefully and apologize for offending anyone.

i meant this in a very light-hearted way to make the point that i dont feel threatened by the men. i also prefaced the comment with that i dont take it seriously. and aw hell, sometimes it is nice to hear youre beautiful even when you know youre not. absolutely! they call me stella at work. i laugh it off because what can i say? i mean i actually have had 3 relationships there in 12 years...but i would be annoyed if i went all the time and didnt get involved and people assumed it.

i resent when people assume that i go there only for a man! i love jamaica for reasons that have gone above and beyond these relationships! i have thoroughly enjoyed my trips when i was completely unattached, and in some cases, MORE SO.

relationships are work anywhere. i find it odd that i would go to jamaica to get away from it all but i have to work on compromise when i get there! i fly solo at home and feel very spoiled by having things like the tv remote & bed to myself, lights out early, toilet seat down, wet towels hung up properly, etc. always a trade off.

Hi all! I hear you Jamaica dreamin', I don't mean to generalize or stereotype anyone, I am just curious what the standards are in Jamaica vs. the US. Men can be good and bad in every country, and some male traits are universal. I am just wondering how differently (if at all, but I suspect yes) men approach relationships in Jamaica.

People at work sniggle and giggle about me. They act so interested in my trip and what I did etc. (nope I did not tell them about this one), and then talk about me behind my back. A friend of mine told me that my fellow guidance counselor just held court about me at an in-service talking bad about me to other people. She suggested that in the future I not even let her know that I am going.
I am 51. Hypothetically if I were to live to be 100 , and had any kind of quality of life at that age, my life is now half over. That's fact, not fiction. Call me Stella, call me a ho, call me a fool, call me whatever you like, just watch ME as I call Northwest Airlines, because as long as they are selling tickets to Jamaica, I'm going.
They all just mad because I CAN go and I DO go. Most of them can't get organized enough to go around the corner.
As for my little bit younger Jamaican man, I told a co-worker who turned her nose up at me. "Ok I will make you a deal. You find me a man in my age range, single, who looks half way decent, who can pay his own bills and is not currently in bankruptcy, who has his own dwelling, who if he has kids, can support them without whinning to me, and who's di** still functions, and I promise you I will drop my little Jamaican cutie and go with him, and will that make YOU happy?

I too would be interested to hear a male view on this topic. I have been traveling to negril numerous times now in past 1 1/2 years and have seen many things.

It is an interesting experience. I love jamaica very much and do have a boyfriend there. I have spent much time in yard and have seen ALOT during this time. It seems that is the best way to really learn what goes on there.
