Funny you should mention that. I was kinda thinking about something similar for my next trip. This is what I came up with. I noticed that a lot of Jamaicans pour the first bit of their beer on the ground. I found out what that was all about. Well my cousin/aunt/surrogate Mom/, was really not a drinker at all...But I have this spanish champagne I drink, called Carta Nevada, by Friexinet, that everyone loves. I have never introduced anyone to it who was not hooked. It's not too sweet, not too dry, just right. Do not get the BRUT, it's nasty, get the Semi Coda.
Anyway, my relative who passed had real bad arthritis. At family dinners I always had this champagne. She would drink a couple of glasses and swear her leg was cured.

I took 3 bottles to Jamaica with me this time and let several people taste it. Sistacaf doesn't even drink, and she liked it. Well when I go back, to my Caribbean, I am going to pour a likkle Carta Nevada in the Ocean for Tur., That will be my tribute.

Also... I really would love to meet you and all the gang, I am considering trying to get to the July bashment. Ive stayed in Ochi a few times but always at sand castles.... where is the group planning on staying. Id like to book where you folks will be. I will probably be traveling alone. Let me know... thanks....

You will have to check with Ochi gal as to a "host hotel", but no matter where anyone is staying, I am going to my Skycastles. That is the only place in Ochii for me.

Poppin in to answer Iriesis...There is not "Host Hotel" per se. We are working on getting discounts at a few places but nothing confirmed so far. Fishermans point is the main one we are working on at this point. But so far the rate being offered isnt all that great. Will keep everyone posted on the bashment main page as things progress.

Just wondering what you heard was the reason that a lot of people pour a little of their beer on the ground. After reading what you wrote, I was thinking they told you it was some kind of "tribute or ceremony" for deceased relatives or something.

I think the reason they pour it is that often (mostly in the past) the beer lost it's carbonation and went flat and sour so the Jamaicans pour a little on the ground to see if it fizzes. If it doesn't, they ask for another bottle. Often they will pour a little in the cap if the bar owner gives them a bad time for mashing up the place!

Just curious of what you heard. By the way, got your PM and will answer later. I am flattered and, frankly, flattered to the point that I am having a hard time finding words to answer!

(((SistahD))) I am planning to meet with Q3210 and possibly another person who lives in Portmore so that could possibly work. My friend, Marshall the Maroon in Accompong Town, has a father in Independence City where I could stay if needed and I have some in-laws there as well. Best to give me a date and then I can tell you if it is possible or not, okay?

From that, we can make some final plans.

Nothing quite so deep, the carbonation thing is exactly what I heard. Mr. handsome man #3 does it each and every time he gets a beer. I would do it for my cousin simply because she loved this particular champagne,Jamaica which she never really saw, and the sea because it was our last connection.

I had to chime in on this one...my dad did the same thing with rum for his deceased father..it took years for me to understand the significance, I think african americans have a similiar ritual.This ritual pouring/libations for the ancestors actually has its origins in Africa.

This board is a great resource for info.

Sometimes I get so frustrated with my peeps..thanks for showing me JA through different eyes!
