marilyn i swear if it was not for you and Miss Mention, i don't know what i'd do. these photos make me cray and laugh at the same time, i swear if i do a trip report Ima call it "Joy and Pain".

classy - feelin you girl, i called in yesterday but figured it would be less painful to come in today on a casual Friday, than it would on MOnday.

IN THE VAN

I am sure that somewhere there are people who leave Jamaica and the conversation on the way to Mobay is....."Didn't we have a great time?"..."I'll never forget how pretty the flowers were and how blue the ocean is." ...."Gee I can't wait to get home, I miss _____" etc. etc. etc.

In Errol's van there is only silence.


Angie and I walked down to the water's edge at Bar B Barn right before he arrived. We had bought a cooler full of Red Stripes and we were trying to drink them all.....part out of greed...part out of need. When we decided that it would not be possible, a friend of ours suggested that we leave them for the men painting at Bar B Barn. This sounded like a good idea.

At the water's edge two sisters smelled the sweet unpolluted air, gazed at crystal blue skies hosting puffy white cottony clouds in an endless horizon. We let the water come just close enough, but not overtake our dress shoes.

Angie looked at me and I looked at her. Her eyes said "Help me Marilyn, how will I bear this?" Mine said to her "ask someone else because my heart is breaking."

People always say..."Why are you sad when you have just come back from "vacation"?" "Vacation", it has not been that for me since the very first trip. Jamaica crept her way into my body and mind like a insidious host. It destroyed my will to go anywhere...do anything else. I feel as though I have been bitten on the neck by a vampire, and I am forever now his slave.

Vacation......you come home from vacations, don't you....I can never again come home, because I am forever leaving it behind me. I leave my heart at Sangster airport, check it in as surely as I check in my luggage. I pick it up right where I see the singers the next time.

"You can always go back".....How about that statement? What junkie among us does not fear that somehow we may not be able to get their next fix? In my case...money IS an object. My mother is 81, and in good health right now, but what if I suddenly have to become her primary care giver?
What if I have to finally buy another car....what if the house burns down.....what if.....fear seperating me from my Jamaica.

Irrational thoughts of a person who is hopelessly in love with a high that I chase time and time again. But you see.....Jamaica never disappoints me, judges me harshly, fails to love me back, leaves me, betrays me.....how am I expected to live without her? Why oh why do you insist that I smile. If I do, it is only fake...make believe...a dance I do to please you.

The van is silent.....where is the body because this is surely a funeral ? I don't want to look at you...my beautiful Caribbean. Five days ago the sight of you lifted my spirits and made them soar, today, you sicken me...because you continue to glow and sparkle....but it will not be for me.

Errol tries to lighten the mood. He hates this part I know. We try to stop at every bathroom we can. Maybe we will miss the plane. Errol is too efficient to let that happen. We twist we turn..then there it is, that sign....Sangster Airport 2KL. My heart stops, my throat dries and gets tight. I look frantically around for somewhere to escape, but I am in the van, and it's no use.

I become an automaton. I reach for bags, get out tip money, passport, papers. Errol reaches for me and I hold on to him longer than I should, he is my last tie and I can't let go of him, but I must.

The rest is the usual formailities. I couldn't resist this time, I turned for the last look and was gone.

I have a post script to this story. Just a minute ago my phone rang at work where I am typing. Many of you know that I have a cousin who has been bedridden for years. I have mentioned many times that I call her and read her your trip reports over the phone. My mother called to tell me that she just died.....quietly.
She was a big big fan of Vi's.

This next part may sound corny, but it is true. See how God works. On my last morning in Jamaica I was walking down the beach with a friend when it suddenly occured to me that I could call my cousin back in the US who is tied to her bed, and let her hear the sound of the ocean. She was breathless on the other end as I let her listen to the waves on the shore. That was the last time I spoke to her. Thank you Jamaica.
