"send us another Brother Moses to come part the Red Sea..."

Day 1
Monday July 19, 2004
4:17AM

"....Karen...wake up, hon...c'mon baby, we're goin' to Jamaica...."
And so begins the story of my long overdue return to Jamaica...I was last there some 11 years ago as a young, single guy at HedoII...I had a fun time, but made the mistake of hidin' behind the walls, tryin' to get the most bang for my A/I buck...I do remember, though, returning home feeling as if I'd missed something....
So we set out on this misty Monday morning with our Daily News, diner coffees and plans for a real visit...it ended up being all, and more, than we imagined...
This was Karen's first ever trip to Jamaica....it was so much fun sharing my admittedly limited knowledge of Jamaican culture with a first-timer...I have to mention right here from the start, my little Poohbear was a great travel companion...open to virtually any and all ideas and adventures...what a trooper....I love her truly and deeply...
We went through the usual airport rigamarole at Newark and boarded our 9:10AM flight for an uneventful trip.....until....
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking....we're just passing over the north coast of Cuba and should be arriving in Montego Bay shortly....."
The great silver bird floated down out of the clouds..."Look Karen!! Look! Look!! that's Jamaica!!!".... I was like a child with my nose against the window of the candy store!
...wheels down, and just as with my first trip, a single tear rolled down my cheek.....I'm back!!
The "modernization" of Sangster removed the thrill of walking down the steps to the tarmac, so we walked through the tunnel and into the airport...down the long hall...and there were the singers welcoming us !!! with a quick greeting to my fellow musicians we were on our way...no problems with immigration....Customs next....
We were trying to sneak a little stash of school supplies along with us, so Customs had me somewhat concerned....
"Do you certify that all things in your bags are your property?( or something along those lines )...very good, you may pass...."
we shared a smile and a wink and moved onto transportation...our transfers were already paid for, so we simply found the Tropical Tours desk, took care of the particulars, and finally (Finally!!) stepped outside into the sun....expecting to board a tourist bus, we were pleasantly surprised to be led to a passenger car for our ride to Runaway Bay....
