I don't know what the rest of you think about giving used items to Jamaicans but, over the years, I have found them not to be receptive of used items.

My Jamaican friend Shereth tells me that is the difference between her culture and mine. In my culture we take special pride in purchasing used things for the money we save and in Jamaica they take the same special pride in spending the money because it is new. She says that is why many people leave the price tags on items to show they are new and not borrowed or hand-me-downs.

Perhaps in the aftermath of Ivan that bias against used and second-hand items has abated but I would like to know what others think about this.

Hi Bill, I've yet to read the whole post, but want to say in my experiences, nothing is wasted and everything is appreciated. Anything used I've brought has always been in excellent condition, but things like curtains, children's clothes and toys(well sanitized), linens, books and magazines...have all gone to good use, whether it be right within the family or to relatives in the hills. I make an effort to be low-key and not santa-like about bringing things though.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Welcome Home!

Margarita Cake

1 pkg orange cake mix
1 (3.4 oz) package instant vanilla pudding mix
4 eggs
1/2 c vegetable oil
2/3 c water
1/4 c lemon juice
1/4 c tequila
2 Tbsp triple sec liqueur

1 c confectioners sugar
1 Tbsp tequila
2 Tbsp triple sec liqueur
2 Tbsp lime juice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease & flour a 10" bundt pan.

In a large bowl combine cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, oil, water, lemon juice, 1/4 c tequila & 2 Tbsp triple sec. Beat for 2 minutes.

Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes; remoce to rack & pour glaze over cake while still warm.

To make the glaze: In a small bowl, combine confectioners sugar with 1 Tbsp tequila, 2 Tbsp triple sec & 2 Tbsp lime juice. Mix until smooth.

Coconut-rum Banana Cake (a heavy cake)

1/2 c soft shortening
1 1/2 c sugar
2 large eggs
2 c flour
1 (3.4 oz) pkg vanilla instant pudding
1/4 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/2 c coconut flavored rum
1 c mashed bananas (about 3)

Cream the shortening & sugar together until fluffy.

Beat in the eggs thoroughly.

Mix the dry ingredients & mix in alternately with the rum & bananas (I cheated on this step & just threw it all in & mixed it up)

Bake in a greased, floured bundt pan at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool & remove from pan. Frost with: 1 c confectioners sugar mixed to desired consistency with Banana Rum Creme.

GB...sorry about the cake-jacking, but I couldn't post these in the cooking forum....they're not jamaican, just good!!!

I tend to agree with Shereth and A.

Of course pretty much everything will find a use, and it depends on how something is given and the circumstances and the person.

But one would ordinarily not give a used item or hand me down to a friend. The perception is if it is not good for you, why is it good for me...because you are more well off? People will rarely say this of course.

And cheap knockoffs are usually known as such too.

I was thinking the same thing about the wood. That house is gorgeous and shouldn't be spoiled by paint. From the little bit I can tell from the pix, that house would sale for a pretty penny in Iowa.
