Okay, so let's talk about shopping for supplies. We leave the kids at home and take off for Sav-La-Mar, with a quick stop at the cambio in Little London. Sav is bustling, and everything is at a much faster pace then when we came through on Sunday. We go to a grocery, and I am relieved to see that it is larger and cleaner than the little one we had stopped in the other day. There are some things we can't get, and we will look elsewhere, but we also have to go to the meat & produce open air market anyway. The whole time we are in the store, one of the employees is deperately trying to impress Cole. Each time I select and item, he takes it to our cart(s). He is falling all over himself trying to be helpful. I find it funny, and she is bewildered. C and I decide to take advantage of it, and ask him to track down a couple of items that we can't find. DWL. We go to another store to buy some wine, beer and rum, and a couple of other things. Like a dummy, I have forgotten sunscreen, except for the half a small bottle I stuck in my carry-on for when we get there. I am so angry at myself, as I have so many at home....but Cole is in search of it....she keeps looking and asking, and it is getting kind of funny....there is very little demand for sunscreen in Sav, and they are looking at her like she has three heads.



I ask C to take me to a store that I can get some items for his sisters. The first place he takes me, there are items on the wall, suspened high. One or two interest me, but I can't see them well enough...and you have to buy in lots....can't touch them, choose colors, etc....strange to me. Take me somewhere else please, where I can feel the fabric, etc. We do, and I select a new blouse for each. Then we are off to choose our produce and meat.






We go around selecting some items. It is hectic and the vendors are aggressive. I let C handle it, and step back and watch. I am not a passive person by nature, but I would rather observe the transaction as it would happen normally, not what might happen if I were purchasing. I don't take nearly as many photos as I would like (or would make Nina happy) because I am too busy keeping a watchful eye out. The vendors are aggressive, the men are aggressive, and their are people that are lurking unnecessarily. We did have a wonderful conversation with that lovely woman shown above. This little girl was darting around us for a while.

We are still in search of the sunscreen (which is getting comical) and a visor for Cole. We pick up the groceries, which have been held for us. I can't figure out for the life of me how they keep track of what parcels belong to who....we stop at a roadside vendor for the visor. I look at a few wares from the vendor next door, while Cole chooses her visor. The owner starts with the lyrics, why did I get married so quickly, etc....dwl....how is that Jamaican men can make the worst lines sound so romantic? We finally stop at a pharmacy to try one more time for sunscreen, and this is what I am looking at while C runs in.


Luckily, he finds some, as otherwise, I would have to get a driver to take me to Negril for it. That would be some very expensive sunscreen!

We get back and unload everything....groceries, beer, wine, rum, and WATER. In retrospect, I think we went through nearly 20 gallons! The girls have a funny story for me when I return. They had taken my daughter somewhere up the road a short way, and she had asked to hold a hand, as her Mommy doesn't let her walk at the street without holding hands! They got a kick out of that. They also thought it was funny at another time when they were distributing candy that I brought. AJ wouldn't take a piece because she has to ask Mommy. She acts crazy with sugar, you know. DWL! Sensible little girl she is ..... our constant 'drilling' does get thru to our little ones!! Of course it never surfaces when they interact with us - their mammas .... typically, always with others!

I forgot to talk about the butcher section of the market. The first time I was there, Cole was with me...I was concerned that she might find it gross or whatever....but she was all game to go in. Until we approach a particularly crazed butcher with his machete flying, cutting up some ribs or something....bone fragments and flesh fying everywhere....I was glad we both had out glasses on! We decide to wait at the edge....C is in buying some beef and pork....we get the fish and chicken right on LB....yummy. Which leads me to food....

Meats...what about greens...Jamaican Cultural breakfasts?
Steamed Calaloo...Cabbage...Ackee and not necessary to have salt fish...all the aforementioned with boiled or fried flour/ cornmeal dumplings and / or with boiled green bananas and/ or various types yams...and /or potatoes.
I`m sure you saw your hosts doing that if not for you, for themselves.
But of course you did have some, I`m sure.

We have a friend who sells fish at market. He will often pick up veggies an tings for we. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img] But, I don't mind going to market as long as I am with Jamaicans who do the talking.
