Dear Editor,


Now that the toll road is open and, according to the operators, they are experiencing above-projection usage, what will happen to us residents who are using the so-called alternative? Are we now to be condemned to a life of congestion, thus wasting valuable production time every morning and a considerable lessening of our quality of life?

The government of Jamaica, through the Ministry of Transport and Works, is obligated to provide proper and adequate infrastructure to facilitate the mass movement of citizens from one section of the country to the next. It will be, in my opinion, gross dereliction of duty for the government not to provide us with a proper transport route from our homes to our place of work. Toll roads are not the solution. More so, if we cannot afford to pay.

Under the constitution, no group of citizens should be discriminated against regardless of their colour, class, creed or their place of residence. We on the contrary have been singled out and "tolled" without a suitable and adequate alternative. It makes no sense for us to pursue the matter in the courts as we already know that the court deals only with law and not justice. But justice we must have. And justice we will have, and until that day when the ease and comfort of travel is not based on our ability to pay a toll, we will continue to boycott. We who stand to lose the most must shout the loudest. Boycott! Boycott! Boycott!

People in JA, Portmore included, do not need to be coddled. They are adults, that will have to face difficulties in life like everyone else in the world. This toll road is just another issue they will have to deal with. Why should they be pampered?

The toll will not be the cause of the congestion. That is an issue of traffic flow, and civic planning. The road is there, if it is used heavily, tolled or free, there will be congestion.

What have u mentioned re economic benefits when the revenue will go from jamaica to france?
GOJ feels it is more economical for France to maintain the road. Again, these types of arrangements are commonplace, and becoming more and more norm. On all my excursions on various parts of HWY 2000, I have seen Jamaicans working.


what have u mentioned re the hijacking of a taxpaid road without providing an alternate route? when an alternate is provided, it is never the shorter, faster, nicer road. Yuh want to drive on good road and reach fast...pay a toll.

Passage Fort Drive upgrading suspended

Less than 24 hours after the $170 million upgrading of Passage Fort Drive in Portmore got off the ground, work has come to a halt.

The project to expand the roadway into four lanes is now in limbo as the contractors are refusing to continue work due to impediments caused by vendors and motorists.

It is reported that the contractors have informed the National Road Operating and Constructing Company (NROCC) that work has been suspended.

Transport and Works Minister, Robert Pickersgill, confirmed on Thursday night that all was not well with the upgrading of Passage Fort Drive.

According to Mr. Pickersgill, the contractors are insisting that no work will take place until they have full access to the entire roadway.

Mr. Pickersgill took Portmore residents to task for frustrating efforts to provide them with proper alternative routes alongside the recently opened Highway.

Under the project, the entire section from the Dyke Road to Passage Fort Drive will be upgraded and new drain systems constructed.

When Mr. Pickersgill toured the area on Wednesday, residents welcomed the repair and widening of Passage Fort Drive but expressed concern that their businesses would be negatively affected as parking space would be reduced.
