PNP and JLP unite to form hurricane relief committee

A bi-partisan committee of the governing People's National Party (PNP) and the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has been established to ensure speedy assistance to persons affected by Hurricane Dean.

The announcement was made Friday by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller at a media briefing which was convened, following a three hour meeting of the National Disaster Preparedness Committee.
Mrs. Simpson Miller also urged party supporters to put aside electioneering as the country braces for the hurricane's onslaught.

"I have contacted the leader of the Jamaica Labour Party inviting him to name a team to work with the team from the People's National Party so that we can arrive at a bi-partisan approach in response to this hurricane and in recovery effort which may be necessary. And I indicated that both of us should be in touch during this period," said Mrs. Simpson Miller.
The Disaster Committee will meet again Saturday.

I have been advised that flights tomorrow to and from Montego bay will either be canceled or delayed.
The Airport will no doubt be closed some time during Saturday all day Sunday and a good part of Monday.
I would strongly advise any vacations departing tomorrow to reschedule their vacation. You really do not want to be in Jamaica at this time.
Airlines are still flying vacationers to the island to day which is, to say the least, irresponsible.

Jamaican Diaspora Southern US Organizes Hurricane Aid (for Jamaica/Cayman Islands)

The Jamaica Consulate General and the Jamaican Diaspora Southern United States Advisory Board are coordinating emergency preparations for Jamaica in light of Hurricane Dean now approaching the Western Caribbean region. A hurricane warning has been issued for Jamaica.

In the interim, persons interested in making donations can make checks payable to the Jamaica Consulate General (Hurricane Relief) and mailed to the office at 25 Southeast Second Avenue, Suite 609, Miami, FL 33131.

Donations of any items should include a list of critically needed items such as non-perishable food items, batteries, flashlights, first aid kits, battery operated radios and bottled water.

For further information, persons can call the Consulate office at 305-374-8431, extensions 223 and 232.

Diaspora Advisory Board member, Marlon Hill, has urged other Jamaican communities as well as members of community organizations throughout the Diaspora to be on the alert in their specific communities to collaborate effectively as preparations are coordinated. All flights into and out of the island are cancelled tomorrow.

ISSUED ON: Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.

HURRICANE WARNING NOW IN EFFECT FOR JAMAICA…VOLUNTARY EVACUATION NECESSARY FOR SOME AREAS

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has upgraded the Hurricane Watch to a Hurricane Warning as Hurricane Dean, the first hurricane of the 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Season, continues to move closer towards Jamaica. This means that the following dangerous hurricane effects are expected to affected Jamaica in 24 hours or less”

§ Dangerously high water and/or exceptionally high waves, even though winds expected may be less than hurricane force
§ Average winds of 118km/h (75 mph) or higher.

Hurricane Dean is moving towards the west-northwest near 28 km/h (17 mph) and a general west to west-northwestward motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds remain near 240 km/h (150 mph), making Dean a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Further strengthening is expected during the next 24 hours.

On the current forecast track, Hurricane Dean is expected to move south of Hispaniola today and early Sunday, August 19, before tracking across Jamaica on Sunday afternoon. Outer bands of the hurricane could, however, start affecting the island by late tonight with increasing cloudiness, showers and gusty winds. As the centre of Dean moves closer to the coastline, the island can expect heavy rainfall capable of producing flash floods and landslides, as well as hurricane-force winds across the island and storm surges over coastal areas.

Evacuations (Voluntary and Mandatory)
In response to these projections the ODPEM is urging for the voluntary evacuation of all flood-prone, low-lying, coastal and landslide-prone areas across the country. As the hurricane continues its projected path towards Jamaica, the ODPEM will move to issue mandatory evacuation of these areas across the island.

§ Finalize your evacuation plans, making sure you know of all available safe routes out of your communities.
§ Find out the locations of the closest shelters to your home.
§ If you do not plan to stay at public shelters make early arrangements with family members and/or friends to stay with them if your house is not strong enough to withstand hurricane conditions.

The ODPEM will provide the public with information on those specific areas to be evacuated.

Vulnerable Community Members
All community members are reminded to keep an eye out for vulnerable persons in your community such as the elderly and/or disabled persons living on their own and pregnant women. Notify your local authorities – the Parish Council or the ODPEM – if such persons are living in your community and will need assistance.

Volunteers
The ODPEM is asking for persons who would like to offer their services as volunteers within their communities during this time to contact their local Parish Disaster Coordinator at the Parish Council Office.

Shelters
If you believe your home cannot offer adequate protection against the winds from a hurricane or floodwater, plan to leave before the impact. Under the national Shelter Programme, government-owned schools are designated as shelters. Information about shelters in your parish can be obtained from the Parish Disaster Coordinator (PDC) at Parish Councils islandwide or from the ODPEM. Find out the safest possible route to the nearest shelter.

The following items can be taken to a shelter: blankets; flashlights and extra batteries; extra clothing; medication; 24 hours supply of non-perishable food and water – do not forget to take with you a can opener; toiletries such as soap, toilet tissue and sanitary napkins; infant necessities such as diapers and baby food; disposable cups, plates and forks; a portable radio and batteries; and a First Aid Kit.

In the meantime the public is reminded to:

1. Stay tuned to the news and weather reports and listen out for emergency instructions, if any should be given.
2. Thoroughly check the roof of your house, hurricane shutters, hooks and latches and repair where necessary.
3. Have your emergency supplies, such as tinned goods and candles, in place.
4. Prune trees that hang over your homes and other buildings if Hurricane Dean should impact the island.
5. Get extra plastic bags and sheets of plastic to protect your important documents, paintings, equipment and furniture from getting wet.
6. Be ready for quick evacuation if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
7. All small craft operators are reminded to remain in safe harbour until all warning messages have been lifted and wind and sea conditions have returned to normal.

The progress of Hurricane Dean will continue to be closely monitored by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and updates will be released to the public as soon as new information has been gathered.
