I do not have a mentor as such, but there are several ministers that I do admire and have a lot of respect for. I am also very challenged by the writings and teachings of various Bible teachers, most significantly, Chuck Swindoll. Would I want to have one? No. Right now I have the utmost respect and admiration for my Pastor, and as long as I am under his teaching and ministry, I am fine.
If you had a friend who was a church leader and publicly successful but privately had struggles which countered their public role in a fundamental way, how would you deal with that situation?
I believe that friends are accountable to each other, so in a situation as the one you describe, I would have no problem talking to him/her about whatever was going on. Galatians 6:1 provides us with how we go about something like that, in the spirit of meekness, being fully aware that we could have been the one in such a situation. Treating that person the way I would want to be treated would be at the forefront of my mind.
Are the concepts of "freedom" and "committed relationship" mutually exclusive?
Not necessarily, though I like to think of it as relative freedom. In other words, one may be free to do something but if it is not in the best interest of the relationship, one would refrain from doing so. I would say however that "absolute freedom" and "committed relationship" are mutually exclusive.
What is the funniest thing you have seen happen in church?
Sort of funny but not quite: two sisters claiming the same brother and hearing them telling others that God told them he was the one.
