Practical steps in the situation referenced can get really tricky. Again, the matter of authority becomes relevant so while I would not speak with the person afterwards, I would share my concerns with my Pastor who would have invited or approved of the speaker in the first place.

There are different types of submission. In the Church, leaders are put in place by God and I do believe that it is His responsibility to rebuke, reprove, and correct them by whatever means He chooses. I do not think it is possible to rebel against divine authority without incurring God's displeasure. For marital submission, we would need a separate thread to air my views as that is a very misunderstood subject.

From a personal point of view, I am not overly concerned about the meaning of names at all. ... I can appreciate however that there may be some people who consider names and their meanings significant.

If the name being given is known to have a negative meaning (based on its origin) would you still want to use it?

I really do not think characters are formed based on names given but given the fact that the world can be a cruel place, I would not give my child a name with an obvious negative connotation.

Sir, a young men in your church comes to you and confides how much he's in love with the worship leader. Although he has strong feelings for her he wants to hear from God and be positive that he should approach her. Do you:

a. tell him to fleece;
b. tell him to pray about it;
c. tell him to approach her and see what happens;
d. tell him something else?

Please provide the reason for your answer and the reasons why you didn't choose the others.

The worship leader at my church is quite the talent, a wonderful person and very single, so I understand the young man's dilema [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] .

Seriously, option c. Regarding (a), the Bible records one instance of fleecing - Judges 6 - by a young man who was chosen by God for his character, but who had an inferiority complex and no faith. It would take a separate thread to deal with this very misunderstood practice, but suffice it to say the only reason God made allowances for Gideon's request was because he was His chosen leader, and to fulfil His covenant to deliver His people, He had to make allowances for Gideon's shortcomings for him to do the things God instructed him to do. There is no other place in scripture where God made such allowances. Regarding (b), no need to spiritualize something as simple as asking someone out on a date.

Frankly, I had fun answering all the questions but I particularly enjoyed the situational ones, especially those posed by Lala, Compry, and (H)Anna(H). While there were others that had me thinking quite a bit, I found the ones posed by those mentioned required some deep thinking. I still haven't finished answering all of Lala's either. That's how deep some of them are.

I do think one of the biggest challenges is that of relevance. The fact that the Church has experienced its fair share of scandal only adds to the indifference with which it is perceived by some people. The biggest variable however, IMHO, is the fact that most developed soceities promotes self efficiency/reliance, and where people are taught to rely on themselves to accomplish what they want in and out of life, God becomes somewhat irrelevant. People want things and they want them now. There are piles of books, courses, seminars, etc..., that tells us how to do this so depending on God for direction/guidance is somewhat passe. I do think this is the same in the countries you listed.

Can those who have never made major mistakes in their lives empathize, counsel and teach those who have? If your answer is yes, then why? If your answer is no, then why?

I think anyone can empathize as we will not live long enough to make all the mistakes ourselves. We however do not need to in order to be able to help those who have made mistakes as I do believe there are certain principles that are true regardless of situations. I do however believe that it is sometimes very advantageous to have someone counseled by someone who has "been there, done that" and came out of it successfully, as that first person experience can be very helpful in getting the person who is struggling see what is possible regardless. Also, it is sometimes hard to appreciate what someone is struggling with unless one has walked in those shoes, or similar ones, and that perspective is invaluable in helping someone who is walking that road. When my father died, I realized I did not fully understand what others dealt with when a parent passed away, though I could emphatize with them in their grief.

When you gave "the talk" to your children, what exactly did you say?

I have had "the talk" with one and basically what I reinforced was God's original plan for sex and the importance of putting a value on himself and the young ladies who crosses his path. We talked about the fact that sex was not just a physical act but a spiritual, emotional, and mental thing, and also regardless of what his peers might say, he was the only one responsible and accountable for his actions. There were other things we covered as well.

What are your views on the recent happenings in the Middle East? Do they correlate to end time prophecies in your view?

What is happening there is in my opinion, a continuation of Biblical history and at the same time partly Biblical prophecy being fulfilled. Real peace will only be accomplised in the manner the prophecies states but even then, that peace will only be temporary once the ulterior motives are revealed. God's timetable and ours are very different so how this will all play out during our life time is anybody's guess. I do realize this is a simple answer to your question but it would take a separate thread to give you a more detailed response.

Use Jesus' parable in which He explained that the kindom of heaven is like a fisherman who throws out his net and caught all kinds of fish in it. There are some bad elements in the Church but that is not reflective of God's intent or His love. At the same time, regardless of what another person or persons may have done, we are all responsible/accountable for our actions or lack thereof, and what was most important was the extending of God's love to the person offended and His demonstration of that through the Cross. Simply put, everything points to Calvary where a Christ in whom there was no sin, was prosecuted and crucified by those incited by religious folks.

This is a tough one because there are two that I really love. The one I would share is "Don't Promise Me Forever" by Mike Desquitado. It is a bit long but see it in my next response.

To be called "Daddy" by someone else's child(ren) is something that is earned, and if the child(ren) are comfortable enough to call me that, then fine. If not, it really wouldn't bother me at all as long as they respect me. As far as I am concerned, that would be far more meaningful.

It was several months ago and was titled: "This Far From Heaven" - a film set in 1957 starring Julianne Moore, who played the part of the ideal society wife with the ideal family, and Dennis Quaid, playing the part of ideal husband but who is also a closet homosexual. This is definitely not a movie for guys, and though lavishly praised by some critics, on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the lowest, I would give it a 3.
