Very good question. Needless to say, the value of beauty contests are very subjective, but IMHO, I fail to see the value. As far as I am concerned, they feed into the stereotype of what is considered "ideal", and I recall some years ago watching a documentary where young girls from a particular country were actually sculpted via plastic surgery and so on to fit a certain image to enhance winning. While I do not discount that perhaps some winners go on to use thier voices to champion certain causes, I am not convinced it is enough to warrant what I consider to be the exploitation of one half of humanity, women. Beauty contest appeals to our baser senses in an environment where women are paraded like objects. But for the prizes, some attention to the winner and perhaps an endorsement or two, I do not see how the contest benefits anyone else or society as a whole.
