Dr. Dudd, Don't you think the now 16.5% gct tax on all items purchased by anyone in Jamaica, contributes greatly to fattening the pockets of the party in power?...or is that being dispursed for road building , schools and other govt. programs?...just looking for your opinion...

Where is the evidence that these politician's 'pockets' are being fattened?
If property taxes were being charged in a realistic manner there would not be the need for a 16.5%c GTC,but the wealthy who really would be asked to pay more,resist it.
So the poor that spends 100% of what they earn is burdened with GTC taxes ijin addition to income taxes.

Is Bajan a perjorative? Is Barbadian the preferred word? Anyone that knows: your correction would be edifying.

I'm afraid I can't distinguish between real wealth and unreal wealth -- both forms of wealth providing money that spends the same way. If you are saying that the wealth Barbados enjoys is temporary, that doesn't make it any the less valuable. Barbados has done a good job of translating tourism dollars into other industries, like Banking.

I have never been to Barbados, but those I have met abroad have, on the average, been more educated and better prepared to take advantage of capitalist opportunities then the average Jamaican I meet abroad. No matter how you slice and dice it, Barbados' economy is far and away stronger than Jamaica's.

Calling Barbadians lickspittles sounds an awful lot like jealousy to me. Instead, I believe we should be observing the Barbadian model and adapting those things that can benefit Jamaica.

Jamaicans are prideful. That pridefulness helped end slavery in Jamaica, and by extension, throughout the Empire. That is good. But pride goeth before a fall, and we are seeing that form of pride today. Many Jamaicans are too proudful to be gainfully employed, but are not too proudful to take money from their gainfully employed women. Many Jamaicans hang out around tourists to rooks them of their money. To see the amount of hassling that goes on in the tourist areas -- is it any wonder tourists want all inclusives and are afraid to venture out to visit the natives?

It is no use blaming all our country's problems on Britian and white folk. Ultimately, our problems are our own, and only we can solve them, unless we want to join the British Empire again. It's about time we stopped belyaching and did something about it.

In my opinion, the greatest contributors to Jamaicas woes are ignorance, stubborness, and superstition. When combined, these three attributes are so powerful they completely rob Jamaicans of perspective and the ability to see the path through. Politicians and demigogues play on these attributes, which perpetuates the cycle of poverty, crime, and government corruption.

Neither opinions that the effects of slavery,(if which was identified by BackYaSo,or the period of the 70's will have any diffieren effect even if we blame the people who were kept out of th eeconomy for 130 years after slavery.
A flow of words does not confirm a resovior od knowledge.
I observe that at the same breath BackYaSo is saying that Barbados has created industries from the 'wealth' they posess,amd he has not visited the country..
You tell me one such industry,or even one infrastructural project that they have created that will be able to wean them from the tax haven dollars that make them 'rich'?

Ridiculous!! I am a churchgoer. What does going to church have to do with the high rate of violence racking Jamaica - especially Kingston.

This is why Jamaica is floundering - misplaced logic. I have no idea what is causing the high crime rate in Jamaica, but I am sure that religious institutions have nothing to do with this as churches flourish throughout the Caribbean in countries which do not have similar crime rates.

Recent studies, one published in a recent thread, have correlated that crime is much higher in Christian countries (e.g., the USA and Jamaica) then in secular countries (e.g., Norway, Sweden, Japan).

It seems that the more Christian a society, the more violent is that society.

No it is more like saying that white people are richer. Si if we have less black people there should ne less poverty.
In other words,the assumptions are not casually related.
It is pure coincedence.

As a person of Taino heritage I blame Chrisitans for the violence in Jamaica. And I have the historical evidence!!! .... Ever heard of a Jamaican pled he is a recent converted pagan in court so they should let him off..

Personal violence is low in Muslim countries... ie there is violence due to ethnicity and religion.. But walk down a street in poorest Cairo, Tripoli or even Baghdad you are unlikely to be robbed ..
