First of all the Kencot SDA does not sit on the Border of PSM's Constituency, it is wholly in Peter-Soft-As-A-Puff Cake Constituency.

I am not sure who is advising the PM, I think that whilst her heart is generally in the right direction, if she wants unity, she cannot single out a certain group(s). She also has to be careful of the arguments that some of you level about 'Theocracy'. Being known as Sista P is OK but she could soon be known as Sista P - the P for Priestess!!!! This 'Big Tent' politics is such a minefield and I would proceed with extreme caution.

In being part of any governmental/committee groups, you have to know how the machinery works and this is critical. I think both of you are right in essence though I would say that it seems there is a lot of religious inovocation that sits uneasily with some of us who are in the diaspora (maybe also those in Jamaica).

I do not think Pastors are the only upstanding people - some of us know the underbelly of the church and unfortunately, the probity which Portia wishes is not always there. I think she needs to very, very careful. I would prefer the 'good' pastors to have continued critical distance so 'if and when' they speak it is heard better through a fora that they 'own'. Anyway, isn't that what the JCC is supposed to be doing at the heart of it's work?

Yes, Tuff - who would you have at table from amongst 'The Faiths'? Absolutely key. Absolutely agree if you want unity in Jamaica you have to recognise that there are not only 780 identified communities but there is a diversity within this.

Who do the communities rate as people of probity who are not into the 'porkbarrel politrix?

Anyway, I have one nomination for a Board Chair - Mr Wilmot Perkins looking at Human Rights. If people wish to be serious then get people who can do some analysis.I am not sure he is at the peak of his powers though it is something that he mentions time and again. What do you think?

I agree with you Motty P. should have been Pres long time ago, the problem with life long activist though is that they generally not good statesmen/women. At little bit of hypocrisy is generally needed to be a good politician.

I think if I was Portia's advisers I would be extremely careful. Pastors are not democratically elected and this is a serious thing to have to consider in the equation. This policy seems to be on the hoof. If some of the things that she has been reported to say in her addresses in the churches are anything to go by - I would be concerned especially in some of the rhetoric.

There needs to be some critical reflection in the midst of the wave of goodwill. I want her to succeed but she might only be as good as her advisers on this particularly instance. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70402-thinking.gif[/img]

This may be a return to the Busta type prime minister.... And this thing with the preacher man may be the ultimate way of demonstrating that they are as morally deficent as teh rest of us! Albeit at another failure...Prime Ministers keep rearaging chairs and not plugging the hole..

I do note that she got rid of KD Knight though.... (She kept Omar though...!) I also predict she wont last long, it seems the critisms of her by her opponents may be well founded..

I think your post here may have hit the nail on the head. I just think that you have to have more than heart and soul.

I think on this one she is poorly served and it may be her undoing. I can see little things happening in these first 100 days that will be critical and could really undermine her credibility and like you said the people that were against her will say 'Mi did tell yuh!!'.

Also notice the quietness of the cabinet. Whoever wrote the speech at King's House was not the same that wrote stuff over the weekend. I guess it was unscripted maybe. She will need to be more circumspect and think of the implications.

I think many will look back at this moment as a defining moment of a Portia Premiership.

Mrs Portia Simpson Miller, we thought, impressed many Jamaicans when she opened her first address as Prime Minister last Thursday with a prayer.

It portrayed her as a sober leader who, conscious of the formidable task ahead of her, sought God's guidance for her government. We have no problem with that. And, in fact, we do not question the sincerity of Mrs Simpson Miller's supplication.

Where we must part company with the prime minister, however, is in her stated intention to instruct her Cabinet ministers to appoint pastors to every state board, either as chairmen or members.

Her reason, she told worshippers at the Kencot Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kingston last Saturday, is "to ensure probity".

The prime minister, we submit, is treading on dangerous ground. For what she is suggesting here is that pastors, because of their vocation, are deserving of more trust than other people in Jamaica. And, if we are to accept her argument, what Mrs Simpson Miller is actually saying is that she intends to give pastors special privileges, simply because they are men of the cloth.

We need not rehash the many cases of unscrupulous pastors that have been reported in the Press to demonstrate the absurdity of Mrs Simpson Miller's argument. And, even if all pastors were without fault, what guarantee is there that their presence on state boards would ensure the probity that the prime minister wants?

Mrs Simpson Miller, it appears, was either playing to the gallery or was not fully aware of the implications of her statement, because the following day she went even further at the Rehoboth Apostolic Church in Portmore when she told the congregation that she was appointed by God and, as such, Christians have a duty to support her.
