Back in my techie days, we reformat "C" because over time there's all kind of residual software and registry stuff that can (and usually) slow a system down. There's all kinds of tools on the market to keep Windows healthy, but they require above average knowledge of Windows to delete some of the stuff identified as duplicates, invalid references, Windows update files no longer needed, etc. I don't have the patience to wade through most of that stuff, plus I don't want to, especially on my own systems.
As for making things easier, that I don't have any data, etc.. on the OS drive means I don't have to worry about losing stuff. I do have to reinstall my applications (I keep most of those on a network drive instead of installing from CDs), but for the most part I find I tend to install fewer each time, and I purposefully look for good freeware where I don't need commercial bloatware. Keeps the system lean and mean, and humming along
