again mi pictures r posting small..wonder wat i am missing from wen i posted the ones from las Vegas......want to show the property..dem have oversized games thru out..like chess etc...u can literally open u door n be on the beach..wanted to show the thatched roof from the inside

have to admit that being in a thatched bungalow wile it rained outside was lovely...made me think bak to go down to St Bess wen some still had thatched , wattle n daub houses....

the gods seemed to be smiling on the trip..after all i shared a homecoming with a complete stranger , and she put a lot in perspective for me

one can get jaded with repetition etc and her tearful joy at being home after a decade and my sharing that, was a singular honour and leveling event

so i float down to Immigration....i had taken the time during the longggg flight to fill out forms using each passport i carry...so i ask the agent wich one he wants...here i must pause to say that he was tall n cute so i was not going to rush the encounter...

so we bantered re wich passport to use n even had other officers chime in ...everybody had a good laff n i was again thru Immi

Customs was just as easy as she asked me where i was staying n that was it

exited n seeing that this is my first 'tour' booking to Ja i was met...escorted to a bus n sat an waited while they sorted out the lot...

i can see that the Chinese have the lock on providing busses to Ja juss now...

after throwing people off the bus since they were on the wrong one, we were off

oh puhleez...i know they might think the commentary by the drivers is informational but dang, check the facts they spew

between some erroneous dates n the quik session in &quot;Jamaica speak&quot; i was ready to hop off n bum a ride from a total stranger

coupled with the stops to afford a chance of drink etc n u realise u r now in the land of one hand washes the other tour tourism

lovely countryside that i had not seen in awhile....an passed Puerto Seco Beach..dang...we use to go dere on trips bak in Primary School....wonder if it still pristine and wild an wonderful ????

we finally arrive at the hotel n my first reaction is , 'wat di heck'....di turnoff is juss dere next to some shop n tings...old property yes, but they bought wen the going was good..u can tell from the spread....

my main issue from dis trip is dat properties have the nerve to say u cannot have a visitor n den want u to sit by the guard hut pon a chair wid said visitor...needless to say we had a good go rung wid dis....nothing like legalise language to point out some errors of some ways and wich flag u register unda mek wich law tek presedence etc. n y because u seh is u rule dont mek it legal n binding etc etc...but i digress...

sigh...mi sista kidney functions r shady fi di fuss time since her cancer...sigh...eek...certainly mek recalling dis trip insignificant..

but i am bak n on top of this...sigh

funny how the stresses of life leave u wile u on the island..could be dat u know u cannot do anyting about u life abroad wile there so u deflate...now bak home, mi ankle swell up, mi knee hurting n mi mind running a mile a minit...

looking at the many pictures i took of the sea , wich was pristine out in the boondocks, i get a sense of peace fi di minit...if only i could figga wat i am not doing dat i did wid the Las Vegas pictures..those came out big an pretty wen i transferred from camera to computer...sigh

people tawk with me just so..i guess i get that from my parents , especially mi modda..she was confidante etc to families...well, being the teacher n the JP it was not hard to have people seeking ur counsel...but apart from dat, people would talk wid har n she would listen...i find i can do that especially with people who i know r getting a beating...do it in the US n do it in Ja

listening to people will tell u the real story of how they r living...how they feel n wat they hope for...wanting is pretty much out of the picture...it is now down to hope for....they hope that it will work out because there is no further down they can go...

dont get me wrong...people celebrate the life they even have in many a way...but the robbing peter to pay paul n vice versa is not suppose to be a way of life fi EVERYBODY....

the property i was at seeminly had majority europeans....from Bristishers to Germans an den u had the Spanish speakers who were i believe from Columbia n odda countries on that side of the world.....

i can tell u dat having paid fi dem trip dem was out to get every dime bak...

Lessons in patriotism


Two recent unrelated events have caused us to give focus to our National Anthem and the value that we place on this symbol of our heritage.

The first was the Sunday Observer report on the State's shameful neglect of the role Mrs Christine Alison Lindo played in the creation of the Anthem more than four decades ago.

The second was the foolish and immature disrespect shown to the Anthem by Messrs Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake at the medal ceremony for the men's 4x100m relay at the just-concluded 13th World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

We have already said our piece on both issues, and note with some amount of satisfaction so far that in the case of Mrs Lindo, Prime Minister Bruce Golding has said she will be formally recognised for her contribution to writing the National Anthem.

We are watching to see what format that recognition will take and whether it will be a fitting honour for the creation of a hymn that fills our hearts with pride upon each rendition.

In the second case, we acknowledge and accept the apologies issued by Messrs Bolt and Blake for clowning around while the National Anthem was being played and while our flag was being hoisted in recognition of the Jamaican team's victory in the relay.

That both men have voiced remorse for their actions suggests that they appreciate the value of these national emblems. It also tells us that they do understand that we all should show respect each time the Anthem is played and our flag is raised.

It is our hope that the signals sent in the apologies of Messrs Bolt and Blake will be transmitted to the misguided among us who took offence to criticisms of the actions of both athletes from this newspaper, other journalists and various members of the public.

<span style="font-weight: bold">We were really surprised at the lack of patriotism coming from people who claim to be Jamaican and who saw no wrong in what Messrs Bolt and Blake did on the podium in Daegu</span>.

The view of some of those people that both athletes <span style="font-weight: bold">should be given a 'bly', simply because of their athletic achievements and status is, in large measure, part of what has gone wrong with our country.
</span>

People, because of their station in life, are often excused when they exhibit behaviour that is crude or when they bend rules, or worse, break the law. Entertainment and sport stars, in particular, are spoilt by either their handlers, hangers-on or blinkered fans, and basically believe that they are above reproach.

The same obtains with politicians, many of whom believe that they have a divine right to rule and that citizens should be grateful for their intermittent benevolence.

The upshot is a lack of respect for institutions and our national heritage which, unfortunately, seeps into the fragile minds of our young people and conflicts with the values instilled in them at the preparatory, primary and secondary educational levels.

It is not uncommon, for instance, to see adolescents, and sometimes adults who would be expected to know better, slouched in their chairs in cinemas while the National Anthem is being played before movies begin.

We would not be surprised if these people ironically joined in the celebration of Jamaica's achievements in sports and other disciplines on the world stage and wrap themselves in the Jamaican flag in wild celebration.

<span style="font-weight: bold">But pride in Jamaica is more than just rejoicing in our successes. It also requires respect for our institutions, national emblems and the people who have given selfless and valuable contribution to the country.</span>

Vannie you made my day as it was just deydaday me aremba bout thatched houses with wattle and daub - I didn't think you were old enough to remember these things although they have thatched cottages in Ireland too. Nice reading your observations - I too remember Negril before tourism. Only the north coast (Ochie, Mo Bay, Oracabessa, Ochie, + Portland,etc.) had a thriving tourist industry.

the memories are vague cause i was a likkle pickney but i have my mother's pictures from down dere...i am not ashamed of my ancestry in Ja..mi modda fada was a Scotsman who neva married to mi granny...one of dem white men who came dere fi wateva during colonial period...mi modda leff St Bess fi go teachers' college a Kgn...mi granny kept har grung...i see pictures of tobacco etc wid har in di midst....even wen dem rebuilt homes dem kept di thatched wattle n daub as someting..outside kitchen, wash room, someting

all my memories of St Bess are fond apart from the long drive from St Andrew hills go dung deh....wid the influx of Scots, Irish etc, their architecture came wid dem
