....heading farther east I took this pic of a hogan...the old style ones seem to be fast disappearing. If you're Navaho, there is most likely a hogan on yur property ....Navaho tings get done in hogans.

...So we finally made it to Durango, a sizeable town in these here parts...with plenty to choose from in the way of accomodations and so forth, cept by this time we were dirty, hungry again, tired, and barely talkin...much less in any frame of mind to be makin choices or decidin much...it was kinda overwhelmin, whatwith the traffic and all, NEON lights, and signs directin ya what not to do everywhar ya turned yur head [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I picked a Hampton Inn that looked brand new and LB went in with the plastic. Perfect. Two large beds, a great shower, a REMOTE with 5 billion channels, free cookies, coffee, fruit and all...and 11 blocks away from a KFC I hit right after I immediately jumped in the shower. LB immediately passed out on the bed with her clothes on, before I even got out the door to lasso a three-pc. meal w/ mashed potatoes and gravy. I have no idea what got into me! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] No pictures here...or in the previous 2 hrs.

[img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] If I could figure out how to post this somewhere so you can download it and copy it with any sort of high resolution...I'll do it. Unfortunately it was only taken with an old half-broken 3 megapixel Kodak...I'll work on it. I could send ya an 8X10...I know how to do that, at least!

...so, settlin in on the bed with the remote, I surfed a few channels and happened to glance the tail end of a weather report sayin sumthin about a high pressure cold low coming down from Utah, colliding with a low pressure wet jet stream streaking across from southern Cal., with resulting debris spilling down right over the motel I'm sitting in, within the next 24 hrs. EEK! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img] ...I spent the next 3 hrs. listening to weather reports, (only rudely interrupted by LB once, who was trying to sleep)...
...this resulted in a delimma: We were sitting at the south end of the Rockies and a snowstorm of immeasurable magnitude was going to desend on us sometime before noon, and maybe by the day after blanket most parts of the state of N.M..... The rental car had lousy tires and no chains. ...and even if I made it to Taos, the storm would probably overun us there and we wouldn't make it to Albuquerkie for our flight out....AND I had to break it to LB in the morning... (who by this time was none too happy with me, but at least she was sleeping) ...that we should probably depart that fair city by 8 am or risk getting stuck in the middle of nowhere someplace farther east. Hmmmm. what to do?

...Well, needless to say, a certain amount of western charm can take most of the wind out of a cyclone...soooo...after declining my fair ladies offer of a single, free one-way ticket aboard the Durango steam train's Xmas run north to scenic Silverton...we did get out of there by 8, just as the snow began to fall. With no specific plan except to head east, and hole up in a motel if it got too bad (like landing on an aircraft carrier at night in a storm)...or maybe at Pagosa Springs, make a break for Albuquerkie...or somethin...Didn't get much pics but here's a few...

...town of Chama...recently resurrected for tourists...We hit a quite a few slick spots but by this time figured we were just ahead of the storm...we could actually see it behind us...we stopped for lunch.

...a half hour lunch, and the storm caught up with us. Again, heading east ...our next waypoint was Pagosa Springs, where we would spend the night, or turn south over the high desert toward ABQ, or maybe, if we were lucky we could just continue on eastward to Taos...

Feeling lucky (we had managed to just stay even with the front edge of the storm), we decided to continue east toward Taos, up through the mountains in the Carson Nat. Forest. About 5 miles out of town there was a sign stating that the hiway was closed, but about a mile after that we saw 2 semi trucks go past us as if coming from that direction, so we proceeded on, only hitting a few patches of ice/snow on the road while the clouds closed over our heads, and flurries developed...



...at one point I said to LB (who was driving), "I wonder what this is going to be like in another hour. As we came around the next bend we were hit by a blowing sideways wind and plowed through about 4" of snow that had drifted over the road. Her reply was: "Don't say that again!" ...having cheated death one more time, I decided not to press our luck any further and suggested we find a B and B, so I wouldn't have to run the risk of waking my aunt up another time in the middle of the night when I got up to stretch out my back pain/injury...There was a place called Stuart House, I remembered...about 2 miles from my aunts...so we stopped there....this place was built in about 1950, and is currently owned by an Anglo/ Hispanic couple...she being a recent transplant from Chicago(6 yrs. ago) Great people!



We got a discount cuz we didn't want any meals, and got the room there on the left, that protudes...with a door to the front, one out the side to a private porch, and one that goes into the main house. She gave us such a great rate that I gambled and booked it for 2 days...I was plumb tuckered out from bein on the road and by this time didn't care if we got snowed in...in fact...was secretly hoping that.... ...the wood came from timbers salvaged from an old mine...

Oh yes, the ever lovin snowstorms! I can't believe those photos and others I've seen of so much snow there, I just can't relate! I love the B & B rooms, could have just stayed and died right there in heaven. Same with your Aunts place, reminded me of my old log cabin in the woods.

It can get a bit testy in those situations. Let's see, the Corvette didn't have chains and there were chain requirements which saved me, even though I had to argue about it still! My saving grace was a junkyard across the road from the gas station with a Vette folded up like an accordion out front, no survivors.

Another time in the Rockies, one of those outrun the storm things failed miserably when I was doing just fine in my AWD van, but kept running across other stuck people in the middle of the road. That was another time one of those travel horror stories came close to happening, lol. Come to think of it, I can't remember a trip across the Rockies without a storm, even on memorial day weekend! And just two or three inches of snow will close the roads pretty much in Albuquerque huh! Or, didn't you get that far? Suspense is killin me!

...ArloTurdYaMon's dreams come to an abrupt end with his pickup truck getting stuck in a snowbank, ...no one is around to help....cuz it is sometime after world war III. He opens one eye slowly....and....his ears pick up a slightly recognizable sound of a hummmmmm....... there undoubtably is a computer screen in front of his face...ok,...deep breath....

(goes an gets a cup of coffee...3 hrs old, plenty strong)

....ok now....let's approach THE LAST CHAPTER!...titled: Grandiose Plans while running for the lifeboat....or sumpthin....

...I had to thank the Stuart House for the first good night of sleep I'd had in a while. We had nothing to accomplish on our "next to last" day...except I needed another memory card for the camera, and LB wanted to pick up some Xmas trinkets, like earrings and stuff, for her girls. For some strange reason, the storm seemed to have stalled out just west of here...and we appeared to have a repreave. After lots of coffee and cigarettes I was ready to walk in here:
